I've posted some pictures of my build (A NB47J combined with a VF700ALCU). A bit tight! http://medlem.spray.se/ragnarroos/ The closeness of those two coolers might actually be a good thing. Since the nForce4 chipset gets quite hot (from what I've read anyway), the "free" airflow from the VF700 fan ...

Don't have any useful advice to add, but I'll mention that I run SATA drives off both an Intel integrated controller (ICH5R) and a Silicon Image controller (built into my motherboard - not a seperate PCI card). The ones on the Intel controller show up as normal IDE drives, while drives on the Silico...

So can I ask you - is there anything I am supposed to do to safely shut down the sata device, the equivalent of the 'safely remove hardware' applet? Now that I think of it, that 'safely remove hardware' applet is not just for USB; on my laptop, I can 'stop' the CD ROM drive, since it's removable al...

Worst things you've broken in the quest for silence?
I can name 2 things from the past week: - A Pentium 4 2.4C. I'd already lapped it, but that wasn't enough. No, I just HAD to try removing the heatspreader. It came off alright, but let's just say pieces of the core came off with it. - A Radeon 9800 Pro. I removed the fan from my Arctic Cooling VGA S...

Another special thing about this team is how new we are. Just look at the team numbers (at Stanford's stats page) - we're the youngest team until #48! This is assuming of course that they assign team numbers sequentially.

This looks VERY promising. We're likely to exceed 20,000 points for the second day in a row, so this isn't a mere fluctuation. It's not just a bunch of delayed units from the day before like last time (11-12 February). Orange will become our "normal" color with occasional bad days as yellow. AnandTe...

That would work from an electronics point of view, but you might burn out the resistor. To calculate whether this is safe, you'd need to find out the power consumption of the fans, and the rating of the resistor. The 4 color bands on the resistor only tell you resistance/tolerance. I have these fans...

I haven't tried stealth fans myself, but people here don't think very highly of them. Some good alternatives to try are (in no particular order) the Papst 4412, AcoustiFan, Panaflo L1A, Evercool (a bit louder than the rest but has more airflow) and Enermax adjustable. Nexus, who make a good 80mm fan...

If low noise is your number one priority, an SLK with Panaflo is better than the 7000A. The 7000A's fan at 5V is pretty quiet but still not as good as a fan you choose yourself. But if you want really good cooling performance and value for money, get the 7000A (especially since it comes with a Fanma...

The extra wire probably doesn't do anything. 3-wire tails can't cost that much more than 2-wire ones so your supplier/shop would've just given you whatever they had around at the time. As for the fan, both the -BX and the -A versions have a 3-pin socket; it's the circuit board inside that's different.

Lies, damned lies and F@H stats
When the regular statistics (like PPW compared with MacOS X) aren't looking so good, it's time to..."invent" some new measures such as the following: Team loyalty (or dedication) : The percentage of users that are active. A low loyalty stat means a lot of people join a team, fold a bit, then get bor...

It's true that the heat generated is the same, but a higher rated PSU uses components that can safely run at higher temperatures. Systematic approach: - Test the fan on its own and make sure it starts at low voltages - Test the PSU with the stock fan again, to make sure it's truly fixed (in case something in addition to the fuse died) If both are fine, it's definitely a wiring issue. Assuming the Tornado and Silencer use the s...

There's a remote possibility of the fan being connected incorrectly. I once put a Papst 4412F/2GL in my 300W Tornado but plugged it in backwards, so it was basically being powered from the RPM sensing line. The fan would never start on its own, and once manually started it always spun slowly (as in ...
