3.3v. :) Thanks for the idea, I would never have thought of that. If it were dead, what would have happened? I dealt with a situation similar to yours the other day. A friend gave me an old (but new to me) computer that, one day, refused to boot for him. After several years, he gave it to me in a f...

Anyone with specific experience in passive cooling of P3s in the 700-1000Mhz range? I got several of these , o-filed the fans and used one with the CPU located directly in front of the power supply intake fan - great "passive" cooling. The other, I placed a L1A fan close by directed on the heatsink...

Bump. What SPRC review? Is there a review in the works or what? I'd like to know what your playing around with the AOpen and DFI boards has produced in the way of observations and sugestions for the rest of us. Can you give us a hint? This thread is 30 days old at this point and I've seen no "moveme...

Hey, Compddd: His name is Ralf Hutter, not Hunter. Please make an attempt to get it right, OK? Using other members name in a thread, even if they are Reviewers or Staff of any kind, is really not the best approach as far as I can tell. No disrespect, but this kind of thing can be pretty irritating, ...

How did you know that everything was still within safe operating temperatures? My wife picked up a baby thermometer that evdently works off of infrared. Normal use is to put this thing in the child's ear and click a switch - the reading (either F. or C.) appears on the read-out. I pointed it at var...

Why glue heatsinks together when you can buy heatsinks at reasonable prices from outfits like All Electronics? No matter what the thermal properties of artic silver are, it is bound to be inferior to an aluminum weld or a single massive heatsink. Do you have some special condition in your case dan? ...

I live at the base of a redwood forest with ferns and mossy stumps and a nearby seasonal brook. I awaken to bird life chattering away each morning. Ambient noise is quite low. The loudest thing in my office is the clicking of the wall mounted clock. The Dimension 8250 used to compete with the clock....

I've replaced 80mm fans on two Dells that I have, an old 4100 and a newer 8250. The 8250 fan was mounted in the detachable plastic frame with rubber EAR like devices so it was easy to replace. The 4100 was somewhat more difficult because the fan was (IIRC) firmly locked into place in some manner. It...

Fingernail polish can be reduced or cut or weakened or even removed by using acetone - usually. The label might tell you which type of solvent the nail polish or pigment was "floating" in. If I'd face4d the same challenge, I'd have coated that teeninesy pin with several coats of the nailpolish. Then...

The mobo is described as a "Gateway Brookings MS-6312" Flex ATX built by MSI and, yes, it is 9.0" long by 7.5" wide. At motherboard.org, the flex AT style was described only as being smaller than Micro ATX. So I found that I was in a "standardization" loop. Its funnier this morning than it was yeste...

 Oops! I see a problem. MicroATX boards are 9.6" x 7.5". FlexAT boards are 9" x 7.5". It looks like I'd have to get another case to use the PIII with any other type of board - all of them being larger than the Flex style. I better start planning on living (temporarily) with just USB ports. May...

The Gateway seems to be a flexAT but how would I know? The model on the back says "FLEXATXSTC BRO Essential" so I took this to mean it has a flex AT board. And that a micro board would fit. While the Soyo Sy-Tisu may be a good board for a Pentium II, I think that it'd be overkill as a Gateway mobo replacement. Besides, I don't think an ATX motherboard would fit in this small case. I bought a cheap Nvidia geforce2 card that has 32MB DDR on it and it seems to do quite nicely apart from the miniscule fan that cools the memory and adds its noise to the PSU fan. Gateway FlexATXSTC - saving a PIII system
Is it a good idea (economically) to renovate one of these PIII systems? A friend of mine just bought a new computer and bequeathed me his small form Gateway box.
