just one additional point, see the instructions attached above, well they're clearer in pdf form than printed in the box with the heatsink and personally i think they could be improved with a bit more text to actually take you through things step by step, and point out that things like twisting is r...

Thanks guys, I ended up taking the sink off and trying again just in case. I got it slightly stiffer perhaps, but yes i could still rotate it at a push. This is kind of a good thing i guess as the arctic silver instructions recommend slightly rotating the sink when its seated to get a nice spread an...

I took some (bad) pictures to try and better show the fit that the pins have both with the motherboard and that the spring is not completely compressed http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3465/3401181321_d0a85c0e98.jpg http://www.flickr.com/photos/jimbobuk/3401181321/ http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3588/...

URGENT - New build - Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme question

Hey folks, I'm just building a new PC at the moment and have just mounted the Thermalright Ultra-120 extreme heatsink on my motherboard/cpu. The instructions are here http://www.thermalright.com/new_a_page/download_images/booklet/ultra120_ex/775.pdf I just wondered that with it now mounted and the s...

Thanks, yeah will definately have to pencil in some quality time using it and enjoying music and my new headphones. Tested hdd temps today.. left it playing some flac albums in a loop and watched what happened to the temps.. initially it went into standby as i'd not turned that off, afterwards thoug...

ok well it successfully prime95-ed for an hour or two at 600mhz @ 0.7v .. I consider that stable enough for me. What was interesting was the temperature took a long time to rise.. similar to my watercooled PC when the fans are off (unfortunately it can't passively cool, so takes hours just getting h...

centrino hardware control allows you to stop upping the speed on load so i now run at 600mhz, 0.7v all the time.. i'll now be able to test it with prime95.. in fact i'll do that right now :) be nice to watch where the temperatures go.. they hover at 60 degrees when idling/playing music after a while...

I've tried both.. I was getting more fan noise yesterday whilst charging the battery... desperate to avoid it i looked into those two.. i liked the look of rmclock but actually getting it to do anything had a load of options that i didn't know whether i could enable or not. Centrino hardware control...

Thanks for the links, i was looking for something similar when it was ramping up too much.. how do both of those programs co-operate with windows XP's enhanced speed step handling? I'm set at max battery at the moment as this is supposedly the most aggressive down clocking. Which is best out of thos...

Let lower power laptops breathe

I went on a bit of a madness purchasing spree over the weekend, all down to an earlier madness that led to my latest headphones http://jimtreats.com/k1000/ Which are actually ear speakers and are the least isolating headphones you could ever have. All my serious headphones are open anyways so far so...

my 9800 pro with vga silencer on it died this morning.. I was watching a movie on my projector with ffdshow upscaling it to 1920x1080 ... thats near 100% cpu load and a hefty gfx usage (on agp bus alone, really needs 8x to work well) ... the screen went black, the sound was looping over what had bee...

Thanks Tephras, so its only the power connector into the motherboard (and any extra power connectors for the motherboard other than the standard ATX one) that gets one rail.. Ok well that settles it then.. for multiple hdds a single rail on the OCZ of 35amps, has to be better than 1 of two rails on ...

hmm, i'll go take a look at PC World tomorrow then.. may buy a few extras just in case.. i may have a 2nd machine with a 9800 in it one day.. its a pretty reasonable gfx setup (perhaps not so much in 2-3 years time :) But if they're going to start getting rare it'll be good to get them whilst you ca...

Is the Artic-Cooling VGA Silencer Rev. 3 discontinued?

Having read the reviews on here where it states the newer VGA silencers are actually worse than the older ones i was wondering if the rev.3 silencers are still in production. I ask as i went to buy one from somewhere today in the UK and they were out of stock and they claimed they'd been discontinue...

I guess so.. tho i wonder how easy it will be to walk out of such places without buying.. Don't know either how quiet such a store is going to be, tho most Apples are reasonably quiet without being under too much load?! are silentpcreview going to review the mini mac?

I've seen a few peoples mini-reviews of the mini mac in the couple of posts on it, i've also seen a few other sites review it.. I was just wondering if it's going to get a full on silentpcreview review, with mp3 samples, readings etc. I've never had a mac before and am tempted.. got a few friends al...

I wish there was a more precise way to figure all this stuff out but needless to say if you are going to go for 6 hdds and 2 optical devices along with CPU and a reasonable graphics card then you need to add up the amps of each device and possibly the 12v amp strain.. I'd love a website or program t...

45W version of the 2400+M or the 2600+M in the UK?

Someone on a forum post elsewhere warned someone away from the 3000+M chip as it had some higher heat rating of 70 watts or something.. I'm thinking of buying a mobile chip for my board.. currently overclocking a 2100+ with watercooling.. the cpu is chilled at 32 degrees but i think my memory is let...
