Re: New WD red series NAS drives.
For what it's worth, I have two 3TB Reds (30EFRX) and I can't hear them at normal working distance (and I tend to be picky when it comes to noise from computers). Even putting my ear next to the case it's hard to say if there's any drive noise over the hum of airflow, and a faint clicking that one o...

Re: "Silent enough" NAS, is Synology or NetGear an option?
Thanks for that... If I had to pick one of those, has anyone here been able to do (or find) a proper comparison between models or brands, using the same or similar disks? I haven't had much time to look further into this myself, but in case anyone else is interested, here seems to be one discussion ...

"Silent enough" NAS, is Synology or NetGear an option?
I'm thinking about moving into the NAS world, and while I know none of the ready-built models are SPCR silent, at the moment I don't have the time or inclination to build my own. I also don't have the luxury of putting it in a garage, closet or attic (at best could try to place it behind some paneli...

Juha: I have MSI-K9AG-Neo2-Digital ( Sheeh what a name ) Anyways, board is excellent. It has good layout, 3 PCI's and Northbridge runs cool. Only problem I had that when I used Logitech MX1000 cordless mouse with USB to PS/2 adapter the baord didn't find the mouse and gave me PS/2 mouse error. Howe...

Terratec make a dual tuner DVB-T card with a PCIe interface; unless you require DVB-S! DVB-C (and anyway as I already have the cards, I'm trying to avoid replacing them if I can...) There are plenty of boards with 3 PCI slots but not ones which also have a DVI output as those are usually micro ATX ...

Cards I already have and don't want to replace with usb peripherals (PCI-E versions don't even exist) unless I really, really, REALLY have to. Two DVB receivers, a HomePNA networking card, and the fourth would be a sound card (I can use the motherboard's integrated audio instead, but I'm doubtful ab...

Motherboards with DVI and 3xPCI?
I'm forced to build a new system after the previous one let out the magic smoke, with these two requirements: * Integrated graphics with DVI output * I need at least 3 PCI slots, no way around it (I would actually like 4 but can live with 3) Besides that, all the usual stuff (passive cooling etc.) S...

What kind of case are they in? The case is a 3700BQE - with rubber grommets in the drive bays, but not as good as the ones in the NSK2400. Otherwise I would try suspension mounting the drive(s), but unfortunately there's not much room for that (and the drive cage is not removable without drilling o...

Actually it could be the cables - I did notice them vibrating quite a bit when I was installing the drive. I tried to make sure that at least the drive end is not touching anything, but they could still be carrying some vibration further on. The drive has become more quiet after some hours of runnin...

Samsung HD501LJ vibrations
I'm having some real problems with Samsung HD501LJ vibration noise. I was expecting some, after reading some messages here on SPCR, but it's quite a bit worse than I thought... Those who have had more than one of the drives, did they all vibrate as much? (Wondering if I could have a bad drive) And c...

Well, I don't mean to say that it would be a bad monitor - even though colors aren't quite as good as on a crt, I'd be perfectly happy if it weren't for the noise (which is not that bad - often I don't even notice it, but sometimes it's getting on my nerves) or the stripes. The stripes, too, may be ...

Well, it seems that they all buzz (or hum) slightly, but some are definitely louder than others. Maybe you got a good one (or simply have enough background noise to mask the sound). My replacement arrived, and it's notably quieter than the one I returned, but in a quiet room I can still easily hear ...

Viewsonic VP201 buzzing
I figured this would be the place to ask... I bought a Viewsonic VP201s lcd monitor last week and found that it starts to buzz if I lower the backlight brightness from the maximum. Actually I have my second unit already, I sent the first one back for the same problem. I found a review at PRAD.de (in...

If it's not the fan, next I would try to narrow it down as much as possible by trying different combinations of components. Remove the hard disk and video card, does it still whine? Oops sorry, I misread your original posting, didn't realize you had already pinpointed the problem to the PSU fan (instead of just the PSU in general). Edit: Reading your above reply again - have you really made sure that it is the fan ("it has to be" doesn't sound like you have actually powered on ...

Yes, pretty much like seen on some Dell PC's... The Zalman 5700 looks interesting, but it's only for P4, right? PAL 8942 likewise, I think. For Athlon, some of the AeroCool heatsinks (HT-101?) might work nicely. Anyway, I'll try building something for the 7000A, as that's what I already have. I'll j...

I've tried stopping the fan, of course - the problem is that the noise coming from the various components sounds different with the case open, so it's hard to say for sure if it really is the cooler. Well, I guess the cpu should manage fine for the time needed to unplug the fan and close the side pa...

Do you have any Seagate Barracudas in that computer? If yes, try unplugging the drives - they're notorious for causing some PSU's to whine annoyingly. Don't know if the Sonata is one of those, though. I think in another thread some time ago someone reported PSU whine that was caused by the motherboa...

Zalman 7000 + Antec 3700BQE ducting idea
The Zalman 7000A cooler is currently the noisiest component in my PC, and thinking how to silence it, I had the following idea: The fan in the CPU cooler contributes nothing to the case airflow, it simply stirs air about over the CPU, so why not just eliminate it? The 3700BQE (like the Sonata and th...

Zalman 7000A rumbling noise
I've managed to make my PC fairly quiet except for a rumbling noise which I think comes from the Zalman 7000A CPU cooler (running at the lowest setting of the accompanying Fanmate)... I know the 7000A isn't the quietest cooler on the planet - according to the review on this site, "...mostly turbulen...

Thanks for the info. In the end I decided to get the Nexus as it was less than half the price and was immediately available (vs. mail order). So far I've been satisfied - it's a big improvement over the standard BQE power supply, and I would say quieter than the 250W Q Technology in my old PC used t...

Nexus NX-3000 or NB-modded Fortron?
I need to replace the stock PSU of an Antec 3700BQE case with something more silent, and the question is, which PSU to buy? Of the choices available here, I think I'll probably go for either the Nexus NX-3000 or a 350-watt Fortron with a Noiseblocker fan . The NX-3000 is still the silent champ on th...

Thanks, silvervarg and Seal, those motherboards I had missed in my search. The A7N8X seems like a nice board, but unfortunately it (and possibly all nForce2 motherboards?) seems to have some stability problems when running linux, so I may have to go with the A7V600 anyway. I also did some more googl...

Hello SPCR forum members (first posting, though I have been reading the forums for some time), I reckon it's about time to upgrade my five-year-old (but silent) Celeron box... As for all other parts I've pretty much made my choice, mostly thanks to the excellent SPCR articles and forums, but I'm hav...
