the nslu2 is indeed very interesting. especially since it's open-source.
but the ximeta needs some proprietary network drivers to work. it doenst have smb/ftp or something like that built-in.

all pentium 2's and 3's have thermal diodes on their dies. they are connected through 2 pins on the slot/chip. it depends on the board if it has temperature monitoring chips that support diodes and if it is conencted to those two pins. my asus p2b has some older winbond chips with only does ntc's, w...

hey! you've got a coppermine core p3 which aren't too hard to cool. i've got a katmai-core 500 mhz p3 which is more power-hungry than your cpu. i'm running it fanless (pc is completly fanless) with a big heatsink from an older p2 which was running fanless too. it's around 40C idle, 43C downloading, ...

i have two maxtor plus9's (both 120gigs) in my system, both decoupled (no other silencing), and they are very quiet! it has NO whine at all, just some shhhh kind of sound, well, like noise, but without high frequencies! i have good ears (me thinks) and there are no other moving parts in my system. i...

WOW! very nice!!! i'm also very interested in the temperatures of the heatsink and espacially the coils and the transformers! been thinking about getting a better psu (fortorn-based or enermax) and redo the mod! so, if your transformers&coils are cool (you seem to have a higher end system) then i'll...

i knew you guys would like it to see my foot again  about the temperatures, it's staying around 45C (no case fans). the forth and the second are maxtor 120 gigs and both are +-1C after half an hour. but, it's louder than before (well, not sure if windows turned off the other 3 hdd's) with insul...

here a little update. i hot-glued a heatsink to the trafos and the caps. and another one to the main rectifier. both heatsinks are getting warm, and the components are cooler than before, kinda surprised how well it worked! also got a dremel yesterday, and have some big plans for modding the case! w...

heya! so, it's finally getting better then it was with the fanned psu! cabling is better now, attached a heatsink to the hot coil, and drilled ~400 more holes into the case-top, now there are 667 6mm holes :-D i think it's quiter now, and the cpu has it's own fan, so it's cooler too. one thing left ...

i bought some large heatsinks, drilled all the holes, and did something (dunno to word in english, "gewinde" in german) for the screws. so, it's "finshed". tested it again with the 3 harddrives, no problems. connected to mainboard, harddrives, and it's working!!! the heatsinks barely get warm, the p...

my fan-less psu. work in progress (update: it's finished)
i added extension wires to the mosfets. not hard to do (soldering is the hardest part), just make sure the contacts are the same as if the mosfets were on the pcb. the heatsinks of this psu were live, but i checked the traces of the back of the pcb and saw it wouldn't make a difference if it wasnt l...

temperature sensing/fan control over smbus
Hey! i'm planning to build a simple cicuit around a LM85 to monitor temperatures and control fans and hook that up to the smbus on my asus p2b (would probably also work on most other mainboards...). i would also code the software for that. my question, has anyone of you done something like that alre...

just the cpu would be on the back of the board, the rest would stay as it is now. it was an idea, it's not possible at the moment, there are no such boards. maybe its inpossible to build such a board, because of the way the contacts are on the cpu and how they have to be routet to the northbridge on...

idea for fanless psu
i had that idea for some time, for complete passive cooling of the psu. it came to my mind when i saw a test in the german c't of a silent pc (pentium 4 something), that had absolutely no fans, just large heatsinks and heatpipes. i thought this could be easily done, if the components that need to be...

Hi everybody! i'm going to add 3 120gb maxtor hd's to my second pc, and let it work as some kind of file-server/leech-machine. it's running win2000. i won't be using the 3 large hd's that much, so i think it would be very useful (energy saving, less heat) if it would be possible to automaticly send ...
