Upgrading my Matrox G550 - music computer
Hey everyone (seems to be about 2 years since I posted here!) I'm wondering if anyone can help... I am looking to upgrade my Matrox G550 with a newer card with better 3D speed. My computer is a music computer, but I do everything on it, including graphic design, games, web etc. I am looking for an e...

Best thing for reducing noise is no (or as little as possible) fans running at a low RPM. Come to think of it, these fancy Mac devices must be overclocked or something, hense they run hot, hense all the fans and all the motherboards that breakdown. ;-) joking Sailfish - I was going to do a smart rep...

First off both Mac and Pc are pretty good with PS(i have both) Where the mac scores is with Colorsync, let me explain. <snip>. another huge advantage (for me) is the system wide keystroke shortcuts. <snip> ® ¢™©¥ all from alt + 1 other key Good points, those two things sound like useful and well im...

Linux is the most breached OS, then Windows and Mac's at zero, check the thread I 've made link posts. Lies, damed lies, and statistics. I take it this is for servers? You realise that there are MANY, MANY more Linux servers than any other type? The moment you have to update your virus definitions ...

What kind of artist uses cheap brushes? Even house painters buy Purdee brushes, not because they are more expensive, but because it saves them money in labor, make their job eaisier, last longer and do a professional job. Likewise with this nonsense comment. (i.e if I make, lets say, a 50 by 50 ora...

Better on a Mac, screen resolution, speed, ease of use, etc. And PC's don't have a great record for uptime, publishing deadlines require computers that work reliabily. That's why in mission critical situations, you want a Mac. Come on, that is pure flamebait right there. Screen resolution? Please e...

Stop being pedantic. Mac made users PAY FOR THE UPDATE from 10.1 to 10.2 AND 10.2 to 10.3 This is incremental in my book. Also, even Macophiles admit that the first versions were nothing better than public betas. Microsoft don't charge for service pack updates, only for full scale O/S updates. M$, f...

Sorry, yeh, i should have said closed OPERATING SYSTEM. Sure, the core is open, but how is it that Apple charge people for each incremental update to the O/S? You think most people are going to download the core and build it themselves? I doubt it. I wouldn't call any Mac O/S open. OSX core, yeh, th...

At the end of the day, I think most people would be happy with a middle - to - top end Mac OR (well built) PC... I think they will both do most jobs very well indeed. One reason (probably the main one) for me NOT buying a Mac is the whole thing is closed. Windows PC is open hardware, closed software...

Untrue. I have used Macs and PC's. I dislike the 'Mac way'. I also dislike the "cult of Mac" and the mindset of those Mac users who think they are superior because they use one. Sailfish gives us a good example - "Mac faithful" - like it's some kind of religous cult or something. sthayashi - IMHO, t...

Higher value caps would be fine. These things are really impresise, I think tolerences can be as high as +/- 20%. RS components in the UK carry a good selection of caps. You want the ones rated up to 105°C. An electrical engineer I know beleives that caps such as these are placed close to hot compon...

I'm very happy with my Nexus 3500, dead quiet. Only dissapointing thing for me was the lack of supplied power cable and mounting bolts. I did email both Nexustec about this, they told me that they don't supply bolts or a cable because it's a replcement PSU, so the customer should have these items. T...

On first look, the case is good. However, on closer examination, there are some problems: 1. Mac rip off looks cheap 2. Case is way too big for most people (7 external bays, 10 internal HDD bays!) 3. Those wheels are kinda lame 4. Weird reverse layout puts processor at bottom of board, pci slots at ...

Best rubber and elastic materials?
I am going ahead with my self-built aluminium 4U rackmount case . At the moment, I am finalising the design and sourcing materials. Since I hear that people find aluminium a bit noisy, I am going to be isolating all the components from the case, and suspending the hard discs. I am looking for two th...

Answering my own question here: it works fine with the Seagate SATA drive. No high pitched whine. System stays about 3 or 4 degrees cooler as well. Takes a full CPU soak without speeding up. The only thing I am dissapointed with is NO mounting bolts and NO mains cable. This is really poor IMHO, the ...
