I've only been upgrading during my whole PC "career". I don't do so often, however, and never go top-of-the-line; instead, most of my components are mid-range due to budget limits. Lately, my upgrades have obviously been for silence, but they also yield substantial performance benefits as well, such...

In general, NIDEC motors are A-okay (IIRC, some have had bad experiences; check that long SpinPoint thread ). The best word to describe JVC motors is probably "inconsistent", as plenty of members have reported success with them, but the majority of them have negative results. What I'm getting at is ...

These are probably you're best bets: Zalman CNPS7000A-AlCu or the ThermalRight SP-97. I would go for the ThermalRight, since it lets you choose you're own fan. Of course, both of these products have nothing on the new ThermalRight XP-120, which is a huge, feather-weight heatsink compatible with *cer...

Definately go with SAMSUNG. Their drives are faster and quieter than Seagate's. If you need proof on the performance aspect, take a look at this article from X-Bit Labs. Hope this helps!

I would think you'd be okay, as long as the foam isn't too thick. Just about 1 inch or less should work. Of course this also depends on how big the HD enclosure will be in the first place...

LOL. I'm very happy with my SP1213C as well. As Fruktsallad said, there is a little whine, but dead silent (and blazing fast) compared to my old WD.

I think the only difference is in performance, as the motors, internals, etc. of these two types drives are pretty much the same. This review and also this reivew shows the performance gain that you get with the SATA drives (such as a lower seek time). Hope this helps!

You are undervolting the fan, aren't you? If you're not, that's your problem (just follow these instructions). If you are undervolting the fan, then...hmm...I don't know. I have the same fan and it's very quiet. Maybe a bad motor?

An aluminum Evercool will do you just fine, as Joseph Clemente can attest to here. If you can, get the two ball-bearing version, since it will be quieter than one with only one ball-bearing (I found this out myself with two 120mm aluminum Evercools). Hope this helps!
