Re: Best media to backup data?
I need about 1-2 gigs now... Surely DVD must be the best option for this amount. Take alternate DVD's to different locations. Take the first to work and leave it in your desk drawer. Take the second to your parents the next time you seem them etc... When you've exhausted all locations start from th...

For those wanting a quiet NAS, I would recommend one of these:
http://www.synology.com/enu/products/DS ... /index.php
I have one containing a 2.5" drive mounted in foam. Very quiet (no internal fan) and faster than my 54Mb wireless network.

No-Vibes 2.5 in the UK
Does anyone know of a UK supplier for the No-Vibes 2.5" model as seen below? http://www.siliconacoustics.com/noisemagic-novibes-2-5-notebook-laptop-harddrive-isolator.html or http://www.noisemagic.de/pdf/novibes/de_2_5.pdf I'm considering either a "Western Digital Scorpio 100GB WD1000VE 2.5" 8MB Cac...

I would agree with steef. Mini-itx is hard to beat for a home NAS. Low power consumption, fanless, good variety of small cases, integrated network/video. The main advantage it has over an off-the-shelf NAS is the ability to run other applications. Mine gets used a lot as a download manager. I've wri...

I recently went through a similar process but with slightly different requirements. I have ended up with a Centrino based laptop with the Fujitsu MHT2060AT hard drive. I don't know if this has more platters than the 40GB version but it is very rare that I hear it. I do feel the heat from it though a...

For those running Windows, you are more than welcome to try my FTP synchronisation program. I wrote this when I couldn't find another program I liked. It can be downloaded from http://www.alock.net . It works by modifying the archive attribute of the local files to indicate it has been backed up so ...

Well meglamaniac, I've lost so many hard disks over the years I am very paranoid and probably go on and on and on and on about backup far too much. I'm sure I drive everyone I know mad  When I shut down my PC, I run a script which performs a backup of my live data over my home LAN to a mini it...

Just a quick question... I'm not trying to start an argument, I'm genuinely interested in how you guys with several hundred GB's of storage actually backup your data. I know this thread is talking about providing redundancy from hardware failure, but RAID is not a backup. What happens if your PC is ...

If you are interested I can provide the source code to a program I wrote in Visual Basic to read the SMART information. It works fine for reading the temps for a PATA Seagate 7200.7. The point I'm trying to make is only perform a backup that has value. The point Bomba made about not destroying your data is valid, not because it is too drastic, but because it is not drastic enough. For those of you at work/college/school when reading this. When you arrive home tonight, pretend on...

There will most likely be people who will disagree with this but... The most important aspect of a backup is that it is correctly backing up your data. You should therefore periodically test your backup. If you Ghost your C partition, try formatting it and restoring your image. If you have a RAID, s...

I have only tried it with 80Gb and 120Gb Seagate PATA hard disks. I would be interested to know if it works with anyone else's drives.

Hard disk drive temperature errors
I have recently consrtucted a quiet FTP server which has no fans in the case. My hard disk is mounted in a Zalman heat pipe cooler so I can only hear the hard disk with my head about 1 foot from the case. After playing around with DTemp, I became concerned about the maximum temperature of the drive ...
