Our local distributor announced avalability of Intel® Entry Storage System SS4200-E - seems to be based on a version of D201GLY with 512MB RAM in a case with a PSU and room for 4x3.5" HDDs. Marketed as a Windows Home Server platform.
I put together my new system, only to find out that the SeaSonic S12-430 is DOA. While it's being exchanged, I hooked it up to an HEC-300AR-TF, and it works fine, although I'm not going to try OCing. Intel Q6600 Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R 4x1GB OCZ PC-6400 GeForce 8800GTS 640MB WD 500AAKS HDD Philips SATA...
On cable management, I found my Seasonic S12-430 cables too short for 'behind the tray' routing to motherboard power and optical drives Could you please elaborate on that? I'm currently planning a system, going probably with P182 and S12-430, and this is quite alarming. SPCR review shows P182 with ...
I'm rebuilding my current system (A64 3200/A8N-SLI/3GB/6800GT/CM Stacker) into a fileserver (replacing the video card with something basic and passively cooled, adding a bunch of 500GBs), and building a new one around Intel DP35DP, Q6600, Leadtek 8800GTS 320MB and HEC 6AR6 case. The question is, of ...
At work, our main server (running Exchange 2003 along with two databases, plus fileserver) is an Athlon64 X2 4400+ on a Tyan Tomcat K8E board in a Compucase 6A19. Tomcat K8E is nForce4 Ultra based, ATI RageXL onboard graphics, dual GbE LAN (nForce4 and a Broadcom NetXtreme), 2 serial ports and a par...
Not aware of anyone selling them specifically, your best bet is to salvage one off a dead motherboard. Contact your nearest PC repair place, they usually have them - I know I do.
Um, this might come across as surprising, but LGA775 retention module is made for, wonder of wonders, LGA775 socket. In order to mount XP-120 on a socket 478 CPU, you use the standard retention bracket that comes with your motherboard.
Fabre, isn't X800XT PE a little hot to run VF700 at 5V? I myself have a 6800GT, and at 7V, it idles at 55-60 (ambient 30+, but still...), and I always turn it up to 12V when I'm gaming, or it can go into 70+ range, and I just don't feel comfortable with that. It does get quite noisy (nowhere near th...
Gatewatch control range isn't as limited as it sounds at first - the 3000rpm VF-700 fan goes down to ~1500-1700, below that it isn't really useful anyway. Your case fans are rated at 950rpm, so Gatewatch will turn them down to around 600 when the system is cool, and turn them up when necessary. You ...
Foxconn website only works well with IE, true, but when it does work, it works well - better than many other manufacturers' websites. By now, I've built dozens of systems on Foxconn motherboards (915G7MC-ES, 865A01-G-6EKRS, 865M01-G-6ELS, NF4UK8AA-8EKRS), and none of them gave my any trouble.
Here's my ghetto duct mod. I did the usual NB32J thing intially, but it still ran a bit too hot for my taste, so I decided to play it safe and broke out the cardboard, scissors, and glue  The case is a Coolermaster CM Stacker, the duct is attached to the drive cage, with an Aerocool Turbine 100...
T-Balancer is the best, but expensive, and requires quite a bit of technical expertise to use. Aerocool GateWatch is somewhat similar, but oriented at "less technical" users - it does less than T-Balancer, but it does so automatically, with almost no setup. Sunbeam Rheobus gives you full range of co...
The RAM heatsinks are fairly easy to remove, you just pull them off. Reattaching them is a different story though, they are pretty much single use, so you'll likely have to buy another set (they are sold separately from VF-700 kit as well, about $5-8 for the 8-piece set).
I've had it happen to me a few times, to no ill effect, I have, however, seen a case where it was worse - much worse - although it did end fine. A guy bought a CNPS-7000B-AlCu for his P4 2.8C. I explained to him how to install it, and he took it home. Shortly after, he calls, and says that he can't ...
Most cases these days still have punch-outs in the back for mounting DB9/DB15/DB25 connectors. I usually open up one of those, draw the cable through, and mount the fanmate on the back wall of the case, to the side of the slot openings. That way, it isn't visible from the front, but assuming the cas...
Last week, I built a system for a customer using this fan controller, and it left quite a favorable impression, so I decided to share. Unfortunately, I did not have a camera at hand, so no pictures. System specs: Athlon64 3500+ Newcastle ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe 2x512MB TwinMOS PC3200 CL2.5 Point of View...
In 1990, I believe we had DOS 3.3, maybe 5.0 - what can you run on it now? In 1996, my 2GB WDC drive was cutting edge - it's sitting in a drawer now, and last I checked, it was still functional - but what am I to do with it? In 2020, the current hardware will be just as obsolete as 1990 vintage 286e...
Interesting. I have this board's bigger cousin (NF4UK8AA-8EKRS) running in the lab, and C'n'Q doesn't fully work there - the multiplier drops to 5x, but the voltage stays at 1.47v. Winchester 3200+ idles at 40C passive this way, with a cheap Foxconn cooler (really similar to the one bundled with box...
Careful with that chipset fan, it spins that fast for a reason - the heatsink is really tiny, and does need a healthy amount of airflow to keep the chipset cool. Check this thread for possible mods.
Semi off-topic, the 4-in-3 drive cages used in Coolermaster CM Stacker case (and also available separately) use the same rubber grommets as the Cooldrive 6 reviewed here. I'm unable to comment on their efficiency, as I'm still waiting (2 months already, dammit) for delivery of my NB-47J, and the 40m...
Either they got a bad sample of Centurion, or they are complete idiots, or they decided they didn't get paid off well enough. The entire front of this case is filtered, which is a well known fact, and yet they specifically say there's no filter. Me, I'm leaning towards the third option.
Heh, before I clicked the link, I was like, "damn, just as I blow $200 on a Stacker, CM releases a new version." After seeing the photos, I'm much relieved - given the choice, I'd still get the old Stacker. Reasons? 1) Looks. The new version takes after Tt and Raidmax, not anywhere near as classy as...
Tyan just released Tomcat K8E , based on nForce4 Ultra. Interesting solution - comes with passive chipset heatsink, and integrated graphics in the form of the ubiquitous RageXL. Doesn't look like it'll be compatible with XP-120 though, graphics card will interfere due to odd placement of the CPU soc...
Hey there, I work in a PC store in Rehovot, and I work near exclusively with HEC/Compucase cases. The 6A19/400 comes with a pair of Yate Loon 120mm fans (sleeve bearing) which spin at about 1800-1900rpm max. Not really impressed with them - a distinct growling bearing noise, especially at low rpm wh...
