If you add Y- Splitter and a zalman fanmate you could adjust the fan speeds so they are quieter and cool "just enough"....

I have been using smartdrives (that aluminum, foam padded hd box) on a couple of systems for 6 months now. I am generally happy with them -- except for the $$$. I was thinking that I could make my own with a large aluminum "project box" that I found at an electronics supply store. I noticed that the...

I also am using my WD 80G 8MB in a smartdrive enclosure. The enclosure is sitting on the bottom of my case on some closed cell foam. I cannot hear the hard drive from 1 foot away.

I have an antec case that had the purple snap in fan mounts. I removed them and used the blue fan isolators in the square fan mount holes. The big part of the isolators will hold in the square holes -- but I can only use 3 of the 4 fan mounting points because the square holes are spaced farther apar...

I also have an XP 1800 with a MCX462. It is on a soyo dragon plus motherboard with pretty much default bios settings. I have it in a mid tower aluminum (coolermaster) case: 1 panaflo in, 1 panaflo out, 1 panaflo out of the blowhole. The 462 has a panaflo. All panaflos are 80mm, 2000 rpms. Also a sea...

The temperature adjustable fan would be a good idea, along those lines I would probably go with the Papst 8412 with the NMT controller (at siliconacoustics). But... since the fan would be at a low speed when I first turn it on, and my bios needs 2000 rpm on the cpu fan speed to boot, I would have to...

I put both (rear) case fans on the FanMate running at 1600rpm. I think I prefer to have a constant fan speed rather than a temperature variable one. I used to have a laptop that had a thermal fan. It was annoying to hear it turn on and off. I cut away the case fan grills. On the Seasonic, I cut away...

I just checked out the 7volts.com site. There is a warning about "....you would trip the overvoltage regulation of the +5 Volt line..." So I have decided to do this instead: Use a Zalman Fanmate and a 3pin Y splitter to control the speed of the 2 case fans. Buy a Dremel tool and cut away the stamped...

I think my next step is to try the undervolting the fans. I recall seeing some web site with step by step pictures for doing the 12v-5v=7v trick. I think it was some store that sold parts. Does anyone have that URL? The reason I didn't try undervolting earlier was that it seems like it's just chance...

Built a mostly quiet computer

I started with a basic PC: ECS k7s5a motherboard 512mb ram 1.2GHz Duron 60Gb western digital 7200rpm CDRW lite-on GeForce2 TI200 Generic full tower case but it sounded like a blow dryer. So I found this site and and started buying some parts: Seasonic 300FS power supply Zalman GPU heat sink Zalman 6...
