Re: The Ten Year PC Build
As an update, the TYPC is about 9 months old, and it's doing great. The one upgrade I do plan on doing next time I move (because it's currently wedged inbetween a desk and a wall and I really don't want to take it out right now) is to go from 16GB to 32 or 48GB of RAM. Photoshop Elements is what's k...

Re: The Ten Year PC Build
Intel's integrated graphics will handle 3 x 4K monitors fine. But to do that you need to daisy chain the monitors via DP, which means having monitors with 2 DP ports (you can use a monitor with only 1 DP port at the end of the chain). You only need to add a discrete card if you want to play games. ...

Re: The Ten Year PC Build
So the whole build went pretty well, I built it over the course of a couple of days, although I was working on some other projects, so it didn't take me nearly that long to build the PC. The only major hangup I had was that I didn't check to see if the little tabs on the I/O plate had seated properl...

Re: The Ten Year PC Build
Also, the machine is pulling about 35-50W of AC power during most normal use, so it's doing very well in terms of power efficiency. I have it connected to a Kill-A-Watt right now just to monitor the sleep and wake, as well as power consumption. I'll have to see how it does with Lightroom running or ...

Re: The Ten Year PC Build
According to Intel Coffee Lake parts from their Chengdu plant should be available by mid Dec, that should ease the stock situation. I got lucky, and I found one in stock at like 6 in the morning a week or so ago, and I actually ordered that ahead of all the rest of the stuff just to get one. If you...

Re: The Ten Year PC Build
The Intel IGPU will be fine for non-game use. If you're planning on running multiple >2K monitors you need to make sure that the monitors have the necessary display ports for daisy chaining. The DVI port is limited to 1920*1200 and you'll need to daisy chain for >2 monitors @ >2K resolutions. Right...

Re: The Ten Year PC Build
So I built the TYPC. I ended up going with the 92mm Noctua, which is fine, even though I will never really like tower heatsinks compared to old school down blowing heatsinks. I also went with the Snow Silent 750, and I'm very happy with that, as the fan just does't turn on under normal use. The syst...

I still hate the design of the tower heatsink monstrosities, but I'm considering going with one of the Noctua towers, either the 92mm model, or the 120m model: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIAADY44C5770&cm_re=noctua-_-35-608-067-_-Product https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a...

Re: The Ten Year PC Build
I have the Seasonic 400w fanless platinum. However the Focus+ has a shorter chassis (140mm) which maybe important depending on the case. Also check the price difference between the gold and platinum Focus+, I would have bought the Focus+ 550 gold if it were available then. I could go back to the Fo...

Re: The Ten Year PC Build
Here's what I've come up with for the TYPC: CPU: Intel Core i7-8700 Coffee Lake (if they ever come back in stock) Motherboard: ASUS Prime Z370A This thing is a bit more expensive than I'd like for a motherboard, but it's got support for 3x digital displays, DisplayPort, and USB 3.1 Type-C. Cheaper m...

Re: The Ten Year PC Build
And we got Coffee Lake! I don't want to upgrade CPU/motherboard in this PC. I want them to last 10 years. The 65W 6 core i7 should be able to do that considering that my 2011 MBP's i7 isn't that bad now, and it's 6 years old.

Re: The Ten Year PC Build
I'm hoping to be able to go with Coffee Lake, but I don't want to wait any longer than that, as it seems there is always something new on the horizon. I'd like to go with a Hexa-core i7. I'm debating on a 256GB vs. 512GB, I may go for the 512GB, since it's not easy to upgrade (reinstall OS, etc), al...

Re: The Ten Year PC Build
The Coffee Lake chips should ship next month, so it looks like my chip is the Core i7-8700 with a 65W TDP and 6 cores. That should be a real beast of a chip, but due to requiring 300-series chipsets, I'll also have to wait on choosing a motherboard.

When I need to use File History it is usually to retrieve an earlier version of a file. What ransomware can encrypt depends on the variant, but potentially they can encrypt anything they have access and write privilege, so backups locally or on the network will be useless if the ransomware encrypte...

Re: The Ten Year PC Build
X58 had a really long life span, especially as it laterly supported cheap very overclockable (and yet still as cool as the old chips) 6 core CPUs. So a platform with a long life is probably a good idea. So for example if AMD is true to their word of supporting AM4 for 5 years, that means in 7-8 yea...

Re: The Ten Year PC Build
I run dual 2560x1440 displays off the integrated GPU (i5-4690k) via the displayport. Current Intel graphics should allow you to daisy chain 3 4K monitors. Good to know. Might be an option. Kind of want a graphics card, although I'm not sure it's necessary per se. Pick your chipset, there're tables ...

Re: The Ten Year PC Build
Be careful with future proofing, your plans won't often match what actually happens so it is best to buy for the short term and let the technology catch up. You could better plan for a decade by saving the money now, investing it wisely and when you actually NEED to upgrade, doing it then. I totall...

I second most of this. I'm a gamer, so my desktop regularly gets upgrades, but at the same time I am writing this post from a 9 year old laptop. My current desktop is 6 years old, an I7-2600K in which I've upgraded my SSD, RAM, GPU, and added a sound card. I'll probably upgrade GPU again in a gener...

The Ten Year PC Build
This project is to build a new main PC for myself. The concept for this PC is that it will last me for ten years. Whether that actually happens or not, we'll know in ten years, but I'd like to build something reasonably future proof. I'm not a gamer, but I'd like a nice fast machine for general comp...

Re: HTPC Build... unbalanced cost
Wow, silence really has come a long way in the past few years. I built this machine, and the case fans are so quiet on 12V that I have to put my ear up to the thing to hear them. The CPU fan was pretty noisy at first, but then I found the motherboard's auto speed regulation feature, and that brought...

Re: HTPC Build... unbalanced cost
I ordered the machine, and thanks you all of your help, I think I ended up with a great system. Pretty excited to build a computer. The last time I built, my P4 2.4C, ABIT IC7-MAX3, ATI Radion 9600 PRO and twin 120GB Seagate drives in RAID 0 were some hot stuff. (remember ATI and ABIT?). I'm a Mac l...

Re: HTPC Build... unbalanced cost
Looks good. Just a thought on the CPU - the 3220 and 3220T will have similar power consumption for idle and low CPU tasks (like video playback). If you use Handbrake or other high CPU utilization tasks, you'll be trading off load power for task completion time as the 3220T is basically a downclocke...

Re: HTPC Build... unbalanced cost
What about the Silverstone Precision PS07? It's a bit more cheap than the Temjin and it doesn't have the 180 mm fan which can't be made very quiet. You could also consider a very cheap case like a Cooler Master Elite 341 or a Fractal Design Core 1000. Or simply go mini-ITX. The vibrations coming fr...

Looks like a good fit. Those wires are pretty bad though.... I guess I can't have it all and I'll have to decide whether the cleaner wiring is worth an extra $70.CA_Steve wrote:Seasonic G 360, 80+ Gold, $60.

Re: HTPC Build... unbalanced cost
I just looked on Newegg (should have done that before), and the Earthwatts 380 PSU that comes with the Antec case is $44 on it's own. So combining that with the Temjin case would only cost $44 over the Antec NSK-3480. That might be my answer... Thoughts?

Re: HTPC Build... unbalanced cost
I was thinking of the case thing more in terms of aesthetics, as I always could get a new PSU with the cheaper one. Are there any good reasonably quiet PSUs that are less than $100? It's not like I need a lot of wattage here. I am going to use the stock CPU cooler, and if I can't get it to behave we...

I am looking to build a Windows Media Center 7 machine for recording TV. As such, it will be a 24/7 machine, and in the main room in my apartment, so I want it to be quiet. I have pared it down significantly, and the 35W TDP of the Core i3 is really, really attractive, so I dropped down to that from...
