Maybe something like this

Not cheap, but it could replace some not-cheap audio gear. And it takes real processors. AND the maker is nearby me, in case the unit ever needs service.

Re: Advice on small PC for audio, please
One final thank you -- in spades. This information has given me a leg up on knowing what I'm doing.

Re: Advice on small PC for audio, please
[...] So, a mobile 15W i7 has less processing power than a desktop i3. Steve! Thanks for telling me that! I had no idea it was so complex and the naming scheme so misleading (I would be inclined to call it deceptive). Now I understand why my i5 laptop is slower than I'd expect. So, before I pick an...

Is there really much difference between Haswell and the later versions?

Re: Advice on small PC for audio, please
Thanks again, Steve. If I do go ahead (still weighing pros and cons vs. my current setup), the best thing I've located so far is the Compulab IPC2. It seems to meet all my requirements.

Re: Advice on small PC for audio, please
Thanks, Steve, for the reply and thoughts. You mentioned that a NUC might not be quiet. I thought they were all fanless . . . I guess that was my misconception. The PC will be used for a lot more than Roon. I hope to run a player program that will decode FLAC and transcode in some cases. It also wil...

Re: Advice on small PC for audio, please
Regarding processor: Roon recommends an i5 for their software today. I'd like to keep the computer for at least 5 yrs, so I am thinking, it's cheaper to overspec it now, rather than replace it sooner. Also, I've never said, "I wish I had bought a slower computer." Regarding form factor: I'd prefer a...

Advice on small PC for audio, please
Audiophile introduction I am considering putting a small PC into my dedicated stereo room. I'm already playing back my music from files on a NAS, and by changing from a DLNA system to one in which a PC drives the DAC directly (probably through USB), I could use the PC to do DSP on the playback stre...

Vendors (Puget vs. endpcnoise.com or ?)
My last computer came from ARM Systems. They sold me a 3 years' warranty and went out of business the day after they shipped my PC. Fortunately, it's worked perfectly, and quietly, for six years. Time for a new one! I am trying to decide between Puget Systems and endpcnoise.com. Puget seems a little...

Need advice - external HD enclosure
I'd like to add external storage to my quiet PC . I am thinking of two drives in a RAID 1 configuration. My plan is to use the WD10EACS 1 TB. My doubts are mainly about cases (though disk advice is also welcome). The Antec MX-1 case ( http://preview.tinyurl.com/4rbo9t ) is reviewed as quiet, but it ...

Quiet external drives?
There are many large (500Mb to 1Tb) external drives available now. Reviews typically focus on speed and software, but don't say much about noise. I would like to buy one and wonder
- Which are the quietest ones?
- Which ones have at least RAID 1 capability?

Re: Dell Precision workstation 370
If you're looking for a decently quiet workstation, try the [HP] XW4200. We have about 20 at my company and noise has never been a problem. The XW8200 system actually uses a case that was reviewed here on SPCR. The XW4200 is similar in design. Thanks for that tip. Unfortunately, our outfit has a bl...

Re: Dell Precision workstation 370
I just bought a Dell Precision workstation 370. It's not as quiet as some of the Optiplexes I've seen/heard. I have a big Dell P.W. 650 at work, and it's not terribly quiet. There is a noticeable low-frequency noise from the cooling fans. I've not opened it to see exactly what's the source. Agree w...

Thanks for the note, SometimesWarrior. Yes, it took me a while to decide to spend the money. However, in using PCs for about 20 years, I have spent countless hours fiddling & tweaking. Sometimes there was no other way to get the job done, and I was glad to do it. About 15 years ago, I was swapping o...

A brief update after using the PC intensively for a while longer. The system continues to work flawlessly and quietly. The ASUS software supplied shows that the processor temperature has never reached even 30 deg. C. The system is completely stable, with no blue screens hangs or anything of that kin...

Brief Review: ARM Systems Stealth AMD64 system
I recently received a new Stealth system from ARM, and I thought I'd post my impressions. Configuration is-- AMD Athlon 64 3500+ (socket 939) 400 W modified Zalman PS Asus A8V Deluxe MB 1024 Mb RAM 2 Samsumg Spinpoint 160Gb 7200rpm drives in RAID 1 configuration Windows XP Pro ARM was kind enough to...

Opinions: endpcnoise.com systems?
I have built systems in the past, but this time I'm ready to let someone else do the work. I would appreciate comments on NW Custom Computers, Inc., doing business as EndPCNoise.com I'm considering the fillowing system they sell: http://www.endpcnoise.com/cgi-bin/e/quietathlon64.html Are their PCs a...
