I have a k6-2 475. I bought the cheapest heatsink I could find that would take an 80mm fan (GC68, $5 or so at SVC) and a low airflow NMB fan. I had to squeeze the heatsink in next to some capacitors, but everything works fine and is much quieter. This is a more conservative route than running with n...

I bought a Fortron Source 300-60PN. Haven't installed it yet but plugged it in sitting on top of a table. Granted it had no load on it, but to my somewhat time-ravaged ears it sounded pretty quiet right out of the box. The thermistor (terminology?) appears to sit on top the heat sink, immediately be...

I will see how it fits in there with the cables bundled up, first, then decide whether or not to try the uncrimp/recrimp idea at the connector; am not comfortable with messing around near the circuit board. The p/s is going into an old, smaller AT case (the m/b accepts an ATX p/s), it's very tight i...

Shorten power supply wiring?
Just ordered a new power supply. The specs say the wiring will be way longer than I need (500mm and my case is about the size of a matx case). Anybody ever shortened the wires on their power supply (particularly the ones leading to the m/b atx connector) and if so, how? Thanks much for any thoughts ...

Has anyone tried putting a more modern motherboard and processor, e.g., socket A, in one of the older Gateway cases with a 200W power supply that Justin R references in his post? (I have one just like he describes, but needing to replace the slightly oddball-size power supply would make it more trou...

I was going to suggest you try the cheapest heatsink with an 80mm fan you can find (svcompucycle sells one for $5) but then noticed you only have 1 1/4" clearance. Not sure you could find a quiet 50mm fan. Your best bet might be to try slowing the one you have down by running it at 7 volts; instruct...

What's the sound of one hard drive dying?
I've got a 10GB Quantum hard drive that's about three years old or so. It suits my purposes fine in a K6-2 475 machine, and I don't want to spend any more money on this computer than necessary. At the same time I'm really fond of the computer and intend to keep it cuz it's been completely stable sin...

I don't know how your AT power supply connects to your case's power switch, but mine is wired directly. Even with the ATX connector on your mainboard, adapting the "AT" power button might be more trouble than it's worth. If your AT p/s is really noisy now, like mine was, you may gain a lot by just r...
