Dump the SilentDrive? How sad. It works so well! But I understand the heat issue...I debated this purchase awhile before making it. I guess I let myself be convinced by the claims that it *probably* would work fine with 7200 rpm drives.
...

Thanks! I'll definitely go check that deal out. Right now, I'm running a 20gb Maxtor, and am not even close to filling it up. Of course, I've only recently gotten a computer that is worth anything speed wise (after having the same old pentium I for 6 years), and I've been ripping cd tracks...so I'm ...

I have an Enermax 430W EG465P-VE (FCA) Whisper adjustable fan speed power supply. I can't hear it at all, and my system is pretty darn near quiet. Would I really gain any advantage from modding this supply, or is it really only for louder models?

Yeah, great job on the site. I'm interested in seeing this fly, having recently become a sycophant to the silence...a devotee of dull murmurs more than loud roars.... Anything other than lots o' posts (to get the fora filled) we early posters can do to help it soar?

I'll be interested to read that review, then. I'm fairly sensitive to noise--when I decided to finally invest in a new rig, my brain reached critical mass with research. I had the system custom built with silence in mind, and have continued modding it (accoustical dampening, snipping out the cutouts...

To be thorough, the smartdrive should be added, true. But for $65?? That money would be better put towards a Barracuda IV with the HDD sandwich mod, IMO. But I'd be interested in seeing a review of it. Hey...any chance I could become an official reviewer for this site so I can get free samples to te...

From the CPU to the PSU? I assume that this only works in configurations where the CPU fan is blowing out from the heatsink, or there is no fan at all--if the fan is blowing towards the heatsink (which I've found works much better for cooling at lower fan speeds with my setup--an enermax adjustable ...

Hmm...thanks for the informative response! This is definitely an intriguing idea...I'll have to do some more research, then see how much of a performance hit I'd have to take to achieve silence. I can decide whether or not its worth it to me then. Certainly worth looking into, though. Thanks! [addsig]

I considered this option for a bit, too, but in conjunction with a watercooling system (i.e., the reservoir tank inside a small fridge, not the whole system). On the plus side was instant access to sodas and snacks. The minus side, however, included the fact that, if this was an attempt to silence m...

Well, I just got my new Seagate Barracuda IV 80GB drive, to replace out my Maxtor DiamondMax 20GB that I had in a SilentDrive Enclosure (which was highly labeled a "bad thing"). So, I now have this perfectly good DiamondMax 20GB that is lying along the roadside on my journey towards silence.
<b...
