I think painting your favourite non-pink case might well be the best answer. Obviously, you'd want to do it before building the system, with the lights and buttons removed or protected with masking tape. Painting the fronts of the optical and floppy drives would be a bit of a challenge, but certainl...

I think it wouldn't be too hard to make something the same size that's better and cheaper but less cool-and-funky-looking.

You were being limited by the code size limit of the free version of the Kiel compiler. Until I read that you were using C, I would have assumed that assembler was the only way to program something like this. Have you seen the free open-source Small Devices C Compiler? http://sdcc.sourceforge.net/ A...

1. From what I've read, I believe that having all the same materials is not much of an issue. Corrosion can be a problem, but I'm not convinced that mixing metals makes it significantly worse. If the different metals are not connected electrically, then there's no way it can matter that they're not ...

Pump survey
For those of you who are into water cooling:
what pumps have you used, and what do you think of them?
How loud are they, and are they louder when in-line or submersed?

Re: Athlon 1800+ Palomino or 2100+ Thoroughbred Rev. B
The 1700 T-bred, at 49 watts, is probably the coolest running. A 2100 T-Bred B puts out 62.1 Watts. Your 1800 Paly puts out 66 watts. If you get the 2100+ but underclock it to run like a 1700+ then the power consumption would be near or identical to that of the 1700+, but you have the option of run...

The Super Silencer 400W ought to be quieter than the Super Tornado 300W, but sometimes it isn't. In MiceC's reviews of them, at low powers the Tornado was quieter, but at 150W and 300W the Silencer was quieter than the Tornado. This makes me think that with better fan speed control, the Silencer cou...

Filters have been discussed a time or two before. I think it was in the Cases section rather than Fans, but the search function should help you anyway. Filters should have as large an area as possible to give minimum flow resistance and last a long time before needing cleaning or replacement. Consid...

You forgot to multiply by 60. Your calculation gives 235.33Hz, not 235.33 rpm. 235.33Hz is 14120 rpm. Fancontrol has tested the ADM chip and found that it can measure fan speeds reliably as low as 85rpm, or 1.417Hz. I have been wondering how it does this. Obviously, it does not rely on having a PWM ...

Can anyone guess how the ADM chip does its fan-speed sensing? Fancontrol said that it can measure reliably down to 85rpm (or lower if you lie to it about the number of pulses per revolution). The PWM frequency can be varied between 11Hz and 88Hz. 85rpm is 1.4Hz. How does it detect speeds that are an...

Back when Spajky made that post, I went to look but the "Electronics" link just lead to a picture of a cat or something. Just now I tried to look again but the site no longer exists at all. I've just seen the circuit! I like it! Clever... So long as the fan's tach pulses are short, the fan speed will be a function of the control voltage applied at the circuit's input, and will not depend on the fan's characteristics (except the number of pulses per revolution) until very near full spee...

I do not know if I can show the picture of the circuit because of potential copyright as well as a desire to support the struggling magazine. Perfectly understandable. I doubt I could find a copy over here though... http://www.nutsvolts.com/nutsdist.htm doesn't list anywhere in the U.K. That's a ta...

Smooth, but will still only respond at a limited slew rate to fast large changes in temperature. It's a matter of preference really. Note that pwm will only vary between PWM_MIN+TOLERANCE and PWM_MAX-TOLERANCE, so you'll need to move those min and max values wider apart. Of course, you could also ap...

Perhaps I could achieve the same by simply averaging the temperature over a longer period. Right. It should be an improvement. (Use a smaller "smoothing factor", i.e. a bigger TEMP_SMOOTH.) I'll bet there are well known control algorithms that can do better and I look forward to learning them. Well...
