One thing I was wondering about recently, is it not worth testing the noise of fans inside a PC, rather than hanging independently? Surely there could be certain fans which vibrate like mad when attatched to a chasis but are quiet otherwise. Id like to see a conclusive, be-all-and-end-all analysis ...

I wonder how the manufacturers measure the flow. Because looking at their datasheets even the slightest increase in pressure on the positive side reduces the flow. Well I did some experimenting today. I measured the noise of a fan at a distance of 0.125 m and 0.25 m. The results were 27.4 dbA at 0.25 m and 34.1 at 0.125 m. Yes it would. However it must be rated at a higher wattage than a normal potentiometer. These are often referred to as rheostats and tend to be rather expensive. That's why I use the above circuit.

Every time you double the distance the noise decreases by 6 dB. So if you measured 24 dB at 1 m you will get 18 dB at 2 m and 12 dB at 4 m and so on. So in your case the measurement at 1.2 m will equal a bit over 23.5 dB at 0.5 meters.
