Thanks for the excellent reply Chris! I think I will just "go for it" then, shall I? 8) I'd imagine with a 18cfm fan, there won't need to be very many holes considering how little air it pushes. It'll probably just come down to experimentation, covering up various amounts of the 92mm intake. Now to ...

There must be some sort of fan control device in my PSU even if I didn't see one, for the whine of the fan certainly changes in amplitude depending on load. It could indeed be that the bearing is shot and exhibiting the exact behavior you mention. I have heard that a PWM circuit can also cause unnat...

Ah! It seems the noise was coming from the 80mm fan in the PSU after all!  Even though I saw no control circuit while poking around in the PSU, there obviously must be something affecting the fan speed during idle vs load. So...any good fan replacement choices? Besides the obvious Panafl...

Well this is going nowhere. I was hoping that the contest would pull more people in and therefore relate to quicker responses, but I am going to have to do this soon, and still no conclusive answer on whether supergluing the yellow objects (transformers?) and the exposed coils will help anything. Well, is there any way to stop this noise, or at least mute it, by applying a hardening substance such as superglue to the transformers and external coils, et al (what other components might make noise)? And does it make sense for the whine to be present during idle periods, but not during full load...

I have an R31 that is MUCH cheaper (picked it up for $800 on IBM's eBay store) yet has the same nice build quality as their other notebooks. Only difference is the case is plastic instead of metal alloy and it's a tiny bit thicker/heavier. The fan rarely spins up unless I am watching a movie or some...

Coil Whine

Yes, apparently my Antec (HEC OEM) PSU is exhibiting a very bad whine on idle, but not load . So I got myself a bottle of brush-on superglue, but I'm not sure which coils I should apply it to. http://tangent.ath.cx/tempstore/psu.jpg Are the coils with the black and yellow cores the proper ones...

OK, let me rephrase - At the CERTAIN ANGLE I am sitting at, the sound is louder than that of the WDBB. Compared to a WDBB in the same wooden box that my computer is in, it is louder in noise. However, if I move around the sound shifts from being a little bit quieter than the WD to where I am sitting...

So would plain old cynoacrylate superglue work to quiet the coils? And if I were to put a quieter 80mm fan in and remove the 92mm, would this have an effect on an already very whiny PSU? I certainly don't have a problem with regulator whine, as I know it happens with all such electrical devices. How...

Well, if the whine is pretty surely the PSU, then I think I will go out and grab another for $20 that is supposedly very quiet. This is really not just a little whine though. It is quite loud and can be heard over all the other components in my semi-quiet system. It's high-pitched enough to drive me...

L&C 350W PSU

http://www.mikhailtech.com/articles/psu/l&c350/ While browsing around on the internet, I found this interesting power supply that is claimed to be very quiet. It also has shorter cables which could help tidy up cable clutter. The power caps are very large. One especial feature is that it seems to h...

OK, I get the picture now. So is this the sign that my PSU is dying and that I should get it replaced? Or is this simply an unavoidable phenomena of all PSUs? Should I just leave Prime95 running all the time to keep the system at full load? :D

Very strange phenomena

I'm having a very strange problem with my computer. Whenever the computer is idle there is a slight whining sound emanating from it that gets quite bothersome after a while. However, if I use a program such as Prime95 to set CPU load up to max and raise the temperature up, the whining sound miraculo...
