Hmmm, my PL1 12cm is the loadest component in my system. It is attached to a fanmate @ ~ 6v but has an irritating buzzing sound.

Just curious,

How's stability and noise with the fan control?

Thanks

Is that the actual name, I would like to find it here in the UK. :D "Plumber's tape" is the name here across the pond. Over there you call "rain coats" "macks" so it could be anything.;) Look in the plumbing section of your hardware store for "Plumber's tape" or "Plumbing strap". It is just a strip...

There is no magic PSU. The heat has to go somewhere. However, there are tragic PSU's. The standard "low noise" PSU uses low noise (low flow) fans on a thermister. To keep the fan spinning slow (quiet) keep the 75W generated by the CPU out of the PSU. The ATX case was designed for 15W CPU not 75W. It...

I've avoided Seagate since the mid to late 80's when we had a stack of dead Seagates literally over four feet high! We had about a 90% failure rate on Seagates during that stretch of time. We actually started using them as door stops. Quantum's used to be the reliabel HDs but my last two failed. I'v...

In the second picture you can see that I do not have a good contact with the HD edge. The Tape is warped and there are gaps. You should get even better results if you bolt it to the HD sith a strip of stiff material. If you have quick rails for mounting HD that would press the copper to the HD givin...

Yes it's copper. At first I tried cutting with a dremmel with a cutoff disk. This was slow, broke 3 disks and heated the strap. It cooled quickly. I then used pruning shears... piece of cake.

Beware that there is also copper plated plubbers tape. You want solid copper tape for this application.

Solid Copper Strap Heatsink

It is called Plumber's tape but it does not have adhesive. (Think tape measure). It is relatively cheap -- $5 (USD) to $10 (USD) for 10 feet. It is very easy to work with--cut with tin snips, bend by hand. Holes match close enough for HD mounting. It seems very effective. I got about 10C drop for id...

Hi Dave, I think Aphonos is on the right track. Like overclocking, quiet PC'ing requires good cooling. For air cooled systems that mean good airflow. Make sure you keep the ribbon cables out of the air flow. See Ralf's obscenely neet cabling:. http://www.silentpcreview.com/files/images/antec3700/bac...

Originally I was going to use the plumbers tape as a heat pipe to conduct heat out of a box like Leo's (PowerGyoza's) Printer's Block Linoleum but I never got around to buying it. Great easy to use heat sink for drives.

I used a spare drive cage and rested it on foam in my old system. Without a front fan dtemp ranged from 41C to 54C. With a 12v 80mm Panflo, dtemp reported about 38C(idle) to 45C(usage) Building off the article on drive heatsink (from the main site)... For my new system I used copper plumber's tape (...

I agree with Rusty except for one caveat. If you use counter rotating fans then you should get increased pressure. You probably want would want a spacer between the fans. This could be usefull for a restrictive heatsink. Counter rotating axial fans can produce pressures similar to centrafugal fans (...

fetaost,
I was thinkiong the same thing. Clear silicone rubber would keep the aethetics.

I know it is just a drawing but, I think both cooling and silencing would be better if the duct was mounted rotated 90 degrees from that of the illustration. That way air would flow parallel to the heatsink fins.

I've had similar ideas, but I was going to make the ducting out of foam sheet itself.

Basically:
* Fresh air directly to PSU and then out of case.
* Fresh air directly to CPU and then out of case.
* Fresh air to HD array probably into case for positive case pressure[/list]

I would think about which has the best weight/cost ratio. Heavier = better sound deadening. I was using the sheet metal to conduct heat to the internal heat spreader fins. Wrap the enclosure in foam sheet, attach a fan at one end and suspend the whole thing. The copper sheets make the sides of the ...

Are you sure, I mean if I had a massive fan blowing on a copper plate all day long, I am pretty sure it is cooler than ambient tempertures. :D Nope. Re: Car-Related Stuff for your Computer.

2. Ultra-Copper silicone rubber, by Permatex. Adheasive property, but can be removed, unlike epoxy. Used as a gasket when heat transfer is necessary. Can hold a heatsink on a chip without any clips. Does that conduct electricity? Could be great for decoupling the PSU while grounding case if it does.

Materials for Drive enclosure

I thinking of making a two drive enclosure, sides out of sheet copper or aluminum and wrapped in foam or paxmat, there will be room for an 80mm fan at the end and internal heat sink fins. How does $19.20 (USD) sound for (12 x 12 x 0.048) inch copper sheet? and $11.10 (USD) for ( 12 x 12 x 1/8 ) inch...

Aluminum is an excelent conductor of both heat and electricity, though not as good as copper. Aluminum is too brittle to make durable wiring, though in the 1960's it is was used in place of copper in home wiring when there was a copper shortage.

The Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 Serial ATA edition is coming out in March. FDB and SATA. That sounds like a good combo.
