Fan Testing by Directron.com
Here is a link to fan noise testing that Directron.com offers on their web site. Perhaps this has been threaded earlier, but their testing is very different than the advice I see on this forum. A couple of observations. I think they ran their fans at full speed. Design differences can make some quie...

Stock Fan Grills
On this forum, I see many people talking aobut if stock grill are "good" or "bad." Stock = what the case has: stamped, laser cut, etc. Can anyone supply pics of what works and what creates additional noise. I am suspecting this is a combo of <<Fan & Grill>>, so maybe a bit more info on Fan, volt and...

Whiny Video Card - PNY GeForce 3 64Mb
I picked up a PNY GeForce3 card for my PII 450Mhz machine to replace the older ATI card. Intent was to off load some of the CPU cycles to the GPU. And to stick to a fanless design. It's be in for a few months. Lately, it has a "whine" whenever I have a mostly white screen. It's not a high frequency ...

Would of never thought of doing this if it wasn't for this form. :D A couple of rubber bands, and the vibration noise is *voila* -- gone. Unfortunately, so is my Seagate drive. I think I shorted electronics with the position of the rubberband (I thought it was non-conductive). Ah well, it's only dat...

Shuttle Cases
Tom's hardware has done a review on two shuttle barebone systems. The one is the Intel variety that has been around for a while SB51G. The other is a new AMD version SB41G2. THG specifically mentions the noise these systems make. Anyone have any experience with them? TIA Peter http://www.tomshardwar...

Subtle point on EMI shielding (Electro-magnetic interference). In the "old days", a mere five years ago, the entire PC system (read "enclosure") had to pass FCC regulations for RFI emissions. The regs have changed. If each component passes, then the system is assumed to be OK. This is what has lead ...

I don't have that many fans. A thermostatic exhaust fan (92 mms or so) plugged into the 3 pin motherboard. A small CPU fan, An Antec PP303X power supply with a "smart" fan. Thats it and I can hear when fans kick from silent mode to cooling mode. I get 66dbA with my RadioShack sound meter Shoot -- a ...

thanks
I saw your article. I still feel that I can't fully enclose the drive with out some sort of active cooling (50C max with 8.5 watts at idle). I looked at the sound specs and they should be quiter than they seem -- 3.9 to 5.0 bels. (can anyone tell me how to conver bels to dbA?) Perhaps my "pulsing" n...

Help in quieting 10K rpm drives
I have a few IBM 36LZX drives (SCSI, 10K RPM 9.1 Gb, M/N:DDYS-T09170) in a 36in tall, steel Micron tower. How do I make them quieter? Most products say "not tested on drives over 7200 rpm". My thoughts are this: Isolate HD cage from frame with gromets (perhaps E-A-R). Isolate drives from HD Cage (su...
