A less elegant solution
Hello miker: A really cheap and easy way to quiet these stamped metal grills and also get more air flow is to simply bend the arc sections with a pair of needle nose pliers out to 90 degrees away from the back of the PS case. This presents only the thickness of the metal to the air flow and it reduc...

The test is limited and somewhat flawed, too
Hello: I read this test a while ago; well before I had come upon this site. And at the time I found it frustrating partly because it sets out to be a "scientific" test, and then in the end, it is so vague and inconclusive. I'm glad for the description of the method -- I'd bet a dime against a $1 tha...

I hope that you have a grill opening!
Hello:
If there is barely room for the fan -- where will the air come from? I hope that you have a hole with a grill for it...otherwise it'll get noisier and not blow a whole lot.

Hello:
Here is a brand of fan -- Silencer, that I have not seen mentioned in these pages:
http://www.pcpowerandcooling.com/produc ... /index.htm
I'm not sure why the 92mm version only has an additional 1CFM , but with an increase of 3dB, but the 80mm is pretty good.

Thermalrights don't seem that they would work w/ sucking fan
Hello: Given that most Thermalright heatsinks are rectangular as far as the top where the fan attaches, and how an 80mm fan overhangs them, I would have to guess that a fan blowing up would not not work well. However, with one of those 60mm to 80mm adaptors, they might work better this way. Can anyb...

Phase cancelation is key
The only thing that can work along these lines is a headphone type setup (and the Bose units used to cost a lot less, BTW -- like $70-80 IIRC). Because in order the cancel a noise, the "antidote" MUST be exactly 180 degrees out of phase, and since the sources of the various noises in a computer case...

Hello skidoodle: If you're saying that a 1/2 sheet of 3/4" plywood only costs $4, then you need to tell us the name of your lumber yard! Last I checked a full sheet (4'x8') of 3/4" AC plywood was around $40, so half that plus the charge to cut it in half might be $25-30. If you want a nice veneer (s...

Hello jojo4u: So, the IBM 180GXP 60GB is the quietest at idle and seek with AAM. (BTW, what does AAM mean specifically? I'm assuming it's the quiet mode.) And it beats the 'Cuda IV (the next quietest) in transfer speed by 42MB/s vs 35MB/s. The 'Cuda IV is quieter in the "fast" mode, though it is slo...

From looking at it, I would not be so sure that this one will work very well. The thinness of the two vertical elements wouldn't seem to be able to carry much heat up to the fins. Also, they appear to be set one over the other and how are they fastened to the base? Soldered? Welded? I'd want to see ...

One thing that I learned by reading some of the articles on Storage Review is that while somewhat elevated temps don't kill a HD right away -- they greatly shorten their life! So, even if you don't hit 60d (where ever you were measuring it) higher than "normal" temps will do in hard drives, sooner o...

It seems to me, that one category missing from both the Recommended section and from the forums, is Quiet Cases. Okay, Alpha recommends that you mount the fan to pull air through the PAL8045. Dan's Data (dansdata.com) says that this gains you about 5% better cooling. It seems to me that better cooling can be quieter... Why is it better to pull the air through a heat sink? Several reasons, I think: 1. The cool ...
