Re: the little engine that couldn't?
It sounds to me like the PSU is the most likely culprit, assuming nothing else has changed in your config except these new components. But in order to try to diagnose the problem properly, I'll need more info--for example, what are these "couple new components" that you added before these random reb...

Well -- somebody's got to try it first! Okay, I volunteer -- I already ordered one this morning... :P I and many others have been wondering about these PSUs, too!! Please let us know how they are once you've tried it, cause I'm really curious!! I've read a couple reviews now that have consistently ...

A couple observations: 1) We have 342 users. Team MacOSX has 1,514 users. It's pretty incredible that they are only producing 2,500 points more than us per day with that huge user base. We clearly have a SERIOUS edge in terms of points-per-user. It doesn't look like their lead is totally insurmounta...

I forgot to say: welcome to SPCR, btw!! And don't get discouraged by your blown PSU--the journey to silence is a fun one, even if it does have bumps in it. :) I am personally experimenting with PSUs myself, too. I have a Coolmax Taurus CX-350 at the moment, but I will soon be receiving a Fortron FSP...

LOL!!!!!!! A casualty of the War on Noise. hehe. I actually did something similar a few years ago, when I was a kid--when I was trying to repair an old Kenwood stereo receiver from the early 70's, one of the things I had to was replace the bi-polar power transistors. But in my ignorance, I rem...

Re: Panaflo fans aren't made like they used to be?
Alright, it says 1 J , but so do some of my L1As--a special batch designation? Made in Japan designation? Who knows, but they are L1A and L1J are the same fans. Actually, 1J officially means it comes without leads, while 1A means it comes with a 2-wire lead. Many vendors are tacking on their own le...

-forceasm and -forcesse are not mutually exclusive, and mean different things, so BOTH can be specified on AMD systems. I thought that -forceasm wasn't necessary if -forcesse was used, since by definition, assembly optimizations are a prerequisite for 3DNow!, SSE, or ANY kind of SIMD architectures....

Yes millions of psu should add up and at some random unlucky istants ask a strangely high power and require a larger generator, but still, no energy is lost, unless a generator consumes more fuel also during the low load istants so that the average fuel/watt is higher for an irregular load than for...

Re: switching PSU Vs inverters and alternators: the bike ana
The intelligent motor would have to know in advance what kind of disturb it's going to stand, elaborate it and syncronize the correction, and it is not feasible in normal life. The analogy doesn't quite hold for PSUs with Active PFC. After all, with a PSU invertor, you know pretty much what its cur...

I'm just using the latest console version with all default settings. If default settings ARE NOT CORRECT (P4? Athlon? 386sx-25?) then someone needs to define what the correct settings are. I have a feeling the capacity we have is not being used to its greatest possible efficiency. Threads like this are a testament to that. I think we should have an announcement or a sticky, explaining to people how to optimize their folding systems, and urging them to DO it. We also need more people t...

I have personally had good luck with the 12cm-fanned Coolmax Taurus PSU. You can find them pretty cheaply at NewEgg, AccuPC, and many other places. I should also soon be receiving a Fortron FSP400-60PFN, which is what the Nexus NX-4000, the 14dB SilenX, and the Zalman ZM400A/B-APS are all based on. ...

You folks might want to check out this thread for pictures that illustrate how you can tell if you have PFC in your 120mm Fortron or not: http://forums.silentpcreview.com/viewtopic.php?t=11634 Bottom line: if you have a big empty space in that spot inside your PSU, you don't have PFC. If there's a l...

To sum it up, because of my bad PF i just have to provide a more-than-necessary powerful UPS and the time I last without AC depends only on efficiency and system drain ? Thats fine then. What do certifications mean?
Alright, I am now curious enough that I am wishing MikeC would create a nice little sticky explaining the various certifications on power supplies. I think it is an important issue for those of us wanting to build quiet PCs, since it is generally said that "the more the better" with certifications o...

I just happened to notice that AccuPC is selling the 400 watt model for a good price! However, I agree, with TWO reviews finding the 12v rail on the low end like that, it does make me wonder. I think I should point out here a couple things: 1) No matter how much a component may increase in heat output, the PSU is likely to see a similar increase in heat output. Why? Because heat is the by-product of one thing: current. If CPUs like Prescott are dissipating more heat than ever, it can ONL...

Lemme guess--is your Fortron a model with Passive PFC? About the only possibility I can think of with regards to your buzzing even when the unit is off is that you have passive PFC, and there is always some amount of current traveling through the choke for things like the +5V Standby signal. It's ha...

In fact, the best cooling results I got were when I tot...

MikeC on empty space in the Fortron Aurora
Well folks, I think I've figured out the answer to these comments by MikeC in his review of the Fortron Aurora: "The unpopulated portion of the printed circuit board by the capacitors is unusual, compared to the many other already seen that were OEM'ed by Fortron-Source. On most of those, there is n...

The main drawback I find with the KT400 isn't so much the lack of support for dual channel or 400 MHZ FSB, it's the lack of a PCI lock. I don't know if the later VIA chipsets have a PCI lock but I am considering switching to a Abit NF7-S mainly for this reason. I can tell you from firsthand experie...

Zuperdee, unregistered, the ASUS A7V8X, something they no longer sell as it uses the unpopular KT400 chipset. Ah. Well, yes the board was unpopular--and I guess I can see why, since the KT400 never did support 400 MHz FSB, despite its name. IIRC, not even the revised 400A ever actually achieved sup...
