Until hologramtic movies come out, I'm fine. My computer can store 100 movies, every episode of southpark, family guy, futurama, the simpsons, months of music and half a dozen games. Games are getting smaller, not bigger, as more things get turned over to on-the-fly rendering. There ISNT anything el...

Hitachi is just trying to save their ass, legally. It's like wearing a seatbelt. It only saves your life if you get in an accident, the rest of the time it's just there. But you still gotta use it all the time. Anyway. In custom designed cases, and in some suspensions, it becomes most space-effectiv...

frank's got it right. I didnt want to connect it to the internal fan connector because it constantly cycles up and down the fan speed, which I find more irritating that a constant mid-speed. Besides, the temperature probe isn't calibrated for the lower airflow of a nexus. So the internal fan connect...

160gb now is 160gb in 10 years, no matter how you look at it. I dont care what anyone says, I don't need more than terabyte of HD space. The only reason I have half a TB now is because I like having all my movies on the computer instead of burning them onto DVD. Just because something is obsolete, d...

CPUs and GPUs are very very different. If you do a bit of googling, you'll find something far more indepth, but in very basic terms, CPUs are designed as general workhorses. They can do whatever calculations you want. They'll take whatever you throw at them. GPUs only do very specific things. They w...

Any drive orientation with a horizontal axis of rotation (aka vertical drive orientation) will experience the greatest tendency for gyroscopic precession compared to any other orientation (assuming gravity is the cause, not some other force). Bearing load is uneven when the drive orientation is any...

Exactly. The only possible component that could be affected by angled mounting is the bearings, and since fluid bearings don't wear out, this can't be an issue. How can people contest this? The heads are not affected The bearing are not affected What else is there? Maybe the electricity in the contr...

You misunderstand.

If the drive was mounted at an angle, it could not be using all four screws.

They want you to use all four screws, therefore they do not want you to mount it at an angle.

Didnt notice that on the Hitachi, but stepping into the bounds of conjecture, such as everyone on the con side of this argument, I believe the reason they claim this is taht no cases are designed with HD cages on an angle. They say use all four screws, therefore, if you mounted the HD using all four...

HDs crash at low air pressure because they rely on the spinning action of the drive to create a cushion of air on which the heads will be suspended. Thsi will not be affected by any angle, it is purely an aerodynamic effect. The only possible reason that a tilted drive would have trouble would be un...

Xilencer, they do not prove the opposite is true in any respect. The one regarding the 6 axes merely states that they will definately work at any right angle to gravity, something that is STILL contested on this board. It doesnt say they will not funciton properly at other directions. The maxtor quo...

Mounting Harddrives at odd angles

As I've seen this asked in about a dozen threads over the last week, I thought I'd clear this up. Any harddrive made in at least the last 5 years can be mounted at any angle. Upside down, on their side, on one end, at 45 degrees, balanced on one corner, whatever you like. You can even change the ori...

nVidia cars automatically clock down while not using 3D, and Im pretty sure ATI does too.

The 5900U only clocks down to 300mhz in 2D, but I modded mine down to 75mhz, and everything still works fine, and it runs 5C cooler

My K8V SE Dlx does this too, and Ive yet to find a way to stop it.

It happens at almost any frequency/voltage, depending on USB usage or heavy 2D image activity.

I'm put some dampening foam on the coils which seemed to help a little, but it's still easily audible

I'd say a good splash of rubbing alcohol would help things out. It has a lower specific heat than water though, so it might detract from the waters cooling potential to some degree

Not enough airflow, issues with cable length, could easily get knocked off and reak havoc with the insides of your PC

Apart from that, solutions that use an insolated airspace for the PSU, like the Antec p180 and the modded Sonatas provide many of the benefits you speak of, with little drawbacks.
