Re: Real-World file server CPU requirements
That's a very interesting test RE: the actual CPU speed required to top out the 120MB/s LAN throughput rate, and exactly answers my original question, obviously results will vary by OS, HDD and LAN controller, but 900MHz is still a very low requirement in this day and age. @Jay_S, My CPU is a 939 Pi...

Re: AMD Kabini: Athlon 5350 Desktop SoC
The one thing that I never expected to be missing from an SPCR review was the noise........
It's "SILENT PC Review" guys, please add noise readings, "The fan spun at a modest speed throughout testing, producing very little noise" simply isn't enough to go on.

Re: why does FD-SOI have few backers?
I will start of by saying that I know nothing about FD-SOI, or the reasons why Silicon On Insulator is not being used as much as it once was, royalties perhaps.? If FD-SOI gave a 10% power drop for a 10% price increase then that could be a reasonable tradeoff, not least because the general rules (to...

Re: Real-World file server CPU requirements
Re: point 2 above, do you need any redundancy in a server that you only turn on to dump data to/from? RAIDs redundancy maintains availability, which is sort of moot if you're turning the server off. Having witnessed catastrophic HDD failure personally more than once, and working as a computer engin...

Re: Real-World file server CPU requirements
I originally went for RAID-5 a number of years ago (originally with 4x 1TB Drives) for the following reasons (in no specific order). A single massive volume rather than several smaller volumes. Redundancy without losing as much HDD space as RAID 0, or 10. Better performance than a single drive. Prob...

Re: Real-World file server CPU requirements
What I mean is this: No matter which controller you end up using, make sure *ALL* your backup drives are on a different controller. If your controller takes a dump you still have your backups. As just a JBOD the highpoint isn't too bad as most of it is bypassed and you are mainly just using the mar...

Re: Real-World file server CPU requirements
Sounds good, but just make sure the MB actually has RAID. The lower end Intel chipsets don't have it. Assuming we are talking 1150 chipets (haswell), the Z87, H87 and Q87 have it. The H81, Q85 and B85 do not. I had quoted a B85 board, good thing you mentioned that, I had made the mistake of making ...

Re: Real-World file server CPU requirements
Thanks again for your help. I had a quick look around for that LSI card and it was either 2nd hand on eBay (I really dont like 2nd hand stuff) or it appears to be way more than I am willing to pay. I have however found this (possible little gem of a product). http://uk.startech.com/Cards-Adapters/HD...

Re: Real-World file server CPU requirements
I again thank you for your help. Washu, you missed out giving a critique of my "write" tests on both my RAID-5 array and single drives. "RAID-5 array scores a write speed of 125 MB/s, whilst a single drive scores a write speed of 80 MB/s." After having looked up a review of my now rather old HDD's (...

Re: Real-World file server CPU requirements
OK back to testing with a popular HDD test tool that also does "write" tests. RAID-5 array scores a write speed of 125 MB/s, whilst a single drive scores a write speed of 80 MB/s. So the two things that I never anticipated being the problem appear to be the write speed on my 2 single drives, and the...

Re: Real-World file server CPU requirements
If you want to run Linux then you should use mdadm instead of your highpoint. If you can set your card to just be an HBA then you could still use it for that. FreeBSD or FreeNAS with ZFS is another option, but you would need way more RAM than you currently have. FreeNAS has a nice web interface. Co...

Re: Real-World file server CPU requirements
When I bought that card it was one of a handful on the market that was PCI-E, PCI-E was a must as PCI is obviously deficient and PCI-X motherboards were insane amounts of money. This RAID card was significantly cheaper than the competition at the time and I lusted after other cards but they were so ...

Re: Real-World file server CPU requirements
Thanks very much for all of the replies. I have installed and run Jperf. With the default settings I got 50-55 MB/s, I then (as suggested) ran it again with the "TCP Window Size" set to 64 Kb, and got a respectable 108MB/s which is exactly what I was hoping for. Next thing to look at is Write speed ...

Real-World file server CPU requirements

Re: Pci-Express 6pin to 8pin, safe?
Regarding the 6-8 pin adaptors, I cant imagine that they are NOT safe, after all lots of modern graphics cards come with molex to 6/8-pin graphics card power connectors and they also only have a single wire providing ground for the 12-volt line - saying that, I have no idea why the 8-pin graphics ca...

Re: Do cell phone calls really have to sound so bad?
In my limited experience of the usage of cellphones and the opinions of friends and relatives that I have spoken to about this very issue there seems to be a concencus forming. Re: Microsoft encourages piracy (and malware/viruses).
I have been saying this for years, although its not "piracy" the use of this term is a deliberate attempt to make the "crime" seem far more damaging than it really is. Piracy is when someone hijacks your water going vessel with violence as the primary tool, followed by kidnapping and ransoming. "Pir...

Re: House Selling
So if your possible buyers were rational the first method would net you a higher price. It shouldn't matter who pays the fees as long as the total fees are less. I think you missed the point of that, "the buyer" pays the fees rather than the seller, meaning that they have already paid a fee to buy ...

I am currently looking at estate agents ("Realtors" the other side of the pond) to figure out who I want to use to sell my house. Re: Question about PCIe x1 video card for PhysX purpose
If nVidia's control panel allows you to set a graphics card to be "PhysX" only, then thats exactly what it will do and you certainly wont need a SLI ribbon cable as they are only needed and only work with the same card (or family of cards). As for whether 1x PCI-E is enough, I don't know for sure, b...

Re: Ceiling fan dimmable light bulb replacement (LED or cCFL
Most people give no thought to their future bills, so instead of buying the light-bulbs that are the cheapest over the longer term (e.g. 1-year), most people simply pay whats the cheapest at the tills and then fork out a small fortune due to their very expensive lighting costs. IMO the best overall ...
