I bought the cooldrive from coolermaster to keep my 7200 40gb quiet. The fan that comes with it makes a high-pitched noise. Anyone know of a place that sells quiet smaller fans?
You'll need to know the size of the fan. Measure from screw to screw along one side.
Newark Electronics (and some other suppliers) will give you free catalogs - which list fans by size - and list noise output (so it's a good place to get an idea of the range for your particular size. The numbers are from the manafacturers and thier testing rigs vary somewhat, so take anything less than about a 4db difference to mean "about equal".
For an equal amount of air moved, smaller diameter fans are louder than larger diameter fans as they have to move their blades faster - and noise is proportional to air speed. If you can figure out a way to use a larger, slower moving fan in place of the one you've got, you'll end up with less noise.
Your fan might actually move more air than you need for your particular cooling application. Try running it with 7 volts (using 5 volt lead as ground gets you 7 volts) and with 5 volts and see if that works.
Finally - the noise may not be actually from the fan itself, but from interference with something near it( - the way sireins work (only they're meant to work this way
See if your fan is quiet when running but not mounted. If it is, look for interference, typically on the output side, near the blades.
Guess that's it...

Thanks for the replies. I believe it is a 40mm fan though I have not measured. The 7V idea is a great one I didn't think of. I could probably do without the fan, but not sure if the hard drive would overheat in the long run. Doesn't seem like the present fan moves very much air anyway.
That is a great idea also. Great low cost way of eliminating vibrating noise. Now I just have to find a way to make it work with my cdrom drive.
