AMD Mobile Athlon XP

Post by hpe » Wed Sep 04, 2002 3:02 pm

Hi!

Anyone ever tried to use one of these?

Found it on an on-line retailer:

AMD Mobile Athlon XP (16W) 1.3GHz 0.13 bulk SocketA

Should be fairly easy to run with passive cooling, rigth?

I can't say that I have any first-hand knowledge about using one of these in a desktop PC, but a couple of issues do jump out at me. First, I'm not sure if a conventional motherboard will properly recognize the chip. I don't know if laptops use specialized chipsets and bios'. The second issue is one of voltage. You'll have to double check that the motherboard you want to put it into has a range of voltages that go low enough. Mobile chips operate at much lower voltages, and most of the "tweaker" boards out there are designed to allow you to raise the voltage for overclocking, not lower it.
