Some pictures of my system

Post by Rusty075 » Mon Oct 14, 2002 11:16 pm

I've made a preliminary attempt at documenting my project to creat a quieter computer. The web page is simple, and probably incomplete, but I'd love any feedback I could get.

This is also my lazy way of responding to the several people who have asked for pics of my system

Awesome! thats really nice work! Could definetly go on HardOCP, just be careful about submitting it if your paying for bandwidth! :P

PS: What are those two black boxes on the right of your desk? Something to do with the TFTs?

Thanks guys. :D

It was quite a bit of work, although it didn't seem that bad as it was spread out over a length of time. The initial construction of the unit took me about 2 weeks. Oh, and the only power tool I used was a dremel, which I used for EVERYTHING!!

Bandwidth is something I'm already worried about. The site itself is pretty big, thanks to all the pictures. And Tripod doesn't include much bandwidth with the freebie site. If the pictures get posted somewhere else I might submit it HardOCP. (MikeC? )

And ChiefWeasel....yeah, the black boxes are for the LCD's. The monitors are Sony SDM-N50's, and the little boxes include all the connections (power, dual VGA inputs, audio in) so that the monitor itself can be smaller and thinner. They're absolutely beautiful monitors.

Temporarily Unavailable

The Tripod page you are trying to reach has exceeded its hourly bandwidth limit. The site will be available again in 2 hours!

Thank you!

Russ, after your article is posted here, trust me, I will promote it to a bunch of hardware site. That's ususually what it takes to kick-start traffic for specific articles -- note the Ultimate Underclock/volt article and the Breadbox PC. Both went ballistic as a result of my promo. When we get linked at HardOCP AND a bunch of other sites simultaneously, we've had the odd server crash -- as many as 20,000+ unique visitors in 24 hrs! One reason why we're looking for an angel to make a gift of a more powerful multi-processor server machine.

Good work man! I look forward on reading your complete article later on!

Slashdot :D has pummeled our server since last night. Please be patient; the traffic will die back down, and we will have a new server soon to handle peak traffic better.

:( I get the same thing even for the main page... Server crash due to [H]ard linkage?

Forum has been down today as well? or is it just my picky connection at work?

Thanks for the compliments guys. This project wouldn't have even been attempted if it wasn't for the community of this site.

(and I'm sorry my article knocked the server down. Who knew so many people would want to look at pictures of my little hobby?)

It wasn't your article per se that caused the Slashdot traffic, Russ, but my submission (foolish, it's clear now) to Slashdot of a PR writeup about it that they accepted. I'm guilty. It probably wouldn't have made Slashdot otherwise. It was my first submission to Slashdot. I had not done it before because of, well, fear, as they have a reputation for often causing this. Obviously it was well founded. :( I didn't know they get 250,000 visitors daily. All we need is 1% of that traffic simultaneously for a few minutes and we'd be in trouble. We still are, I guess.

Russ, it is a great project & people will get to see it here soon. We're on our way to a new server. Nothing like necessity...

Hi guys! :D

New to this forum, but a friend of mine pointed this out to me and I just had to reply.

Earlier this year I started on a project to build a PC into my desk. You can see the results here http://users.surfanytime.co.uk/fish/sophie.html .

Granted, it's not nearly as tidy as yours, Rusty, but it was great fun building it. Originally I only had two fans trying to keep it cool, but I've since added a few more, and installed a Zalman h/s.

It's an ongoing project. I'm planning on trying to build a second PC into the desk which will basically be running Linux and act as a firewall.

I love it!!

Post by redrumjack » Mon Oct 28, 2002 5:52 pm

I saw this PC and desk and loved it and it started me thinking....

I've got three computers, two are athlons (noisy beasts) and one is an old celeron and a mass of cables I'd like to hide. I'm thinking maybe I could do something like this except with maybe a book case or a wooden filing cabinet.

Now I'm off to hunt for old furniture I can kill :P

I got a cabinet from Home Depot (or was it Lowe's?) that I'm planning on making an enclosure from. I intend to maintain the integrity of my enlight cases, shoving the entire lot (2 machines) into the cabinet. Hopefully that'll aid in keeping the noise down.

Yeh I've had similar thoughts, except I would try and use some sort of storage chest. That way, it could also double as a test bench when the top is closed.

off to lowe's and office max after work. Maybe I'll hit GoodWill and the Salvation Army too to see if I can find something that will work.

Yeah it should do! How you gonna keep the air flowing through the cabinet? Intake at the bottom, exhaust at the top?

Intake and exhaust at the rear, intake at the bottom, exhaust at the top. Gonna start with one fan (exhaust), and add if necessary.

Some link(s) on the web must have revived interest in Rusty's now historical project; it's been read some 2000 times in the past 12 hrs!

Yeah is very very good indeed.

You ever trought about a hardware upgrade? i mean, you are using a XP 1900+, even a 1.6v causes a lot of heat, a Sempron 140 or a Celeron 430 will easily outperform the XP 1900, while generaring less heat.

I think you shoult even need the rear 120mm fan to be working.

No matter if its an Sempron 140 w/785G or a Celeron 430 w/GF9300, in both you will have better CPU and video performance while removing 2 fans, well, you can keep the read one at 4v @24/7.

Shivansps2 --

Russ is probably unable to reply directly to your query. He's been hiking the Appalachian Trail since March 17, having hiked 1986.5 miles as of Sept 5.

btw, did you find Russ's article on your own or through some link out in the web? If the latter, can you please show me? (just make 2 posts so you can post a link)
