Recommend Silent LCD Monitor

My Viewsonic VX924 makes no noise that I can observe from my sitting position about 24" from where it sits on my desk. It also matches the P180 color scheme quite well.

My Samsung SyncMaster 940BF makes a slight humming noise that I can only hear at night. Actually, it sounds similar to the PWM noise a cordless drill makes, only quieter. If I set my backlight to 100%, there is no hum. I believe(as jaganath stated) the CCFL's are PWM controlled in my monitor(also my laptop). I can also sometimes see the flicker of the CCFL's if I have a dark screen with the mouse in the middle and move my eyes around(my backlight is usually set to 50%).

By the way, I've been lurking around here a while. I built a few quiet systems and quieted them down more based on the wealth of knowledge found here. This site has also influenced what products I buy for my computer (now to do something with that pile of extra fans

I received a second Samsung 930B (dual monitors, woo hoo!) and can also say that it is silent (at a specific point). I have both at 90 brightness/70 contrast. A lower brightness, such as 80, results in a very noticeable buzz. 90/70 looks great anyway, so it doesnt make a difference.

This sounds a bit surreal: why would you care what sound it makes switch on, but with the PC turned *off* ? Do you sit at night staring at a blank screen ? Or am I missing something ?

Also I have not noticed the sound of my prolite, but I was a bit shocked to see it still used 9W when it is switched off using the panel switch (but perhaps the powerblock is crap ?).

I also have a Samsung 940B. I'm using for approx two years. Now that I modified my PC to quiet, now I hear the inverter noise of the Samsung 940B. Settings are: Brightness is 10%, and Contrast is 20% (and I find it still very bright). The inverter noise definitely can be heard.

I've got a Dell Ultrasharp 2007WFP at home, and there is an irritating buzz which is dependent upon the brightness of the background - the more white there is, the louder the buzz. (Ironically, this is the same problem that I have with my Philips TV, but that's another story ...).

I'm using two of these Dell monitors - one at home, and the other in the office. Background noise in my office would mean that I wouldn't hear the monitor buzz, so I'm going to swap them over, and see if my noisy monitor at home is a 'one off', or if its a general problem with this model.

My Hyundai L90D+ emits a very, very faint white-noise when I turn it on. Personally, I've never noticed it until just now, when I put my ear up to the back of the panel and switched it on and off.

In other words, it's silent. I'm a violinist with perfect pitch (both a blessing and a curse, let me tell you), and I can't hear a damn thing coming from it at approximately 3 feet away. I've owned it since 2005.

My experiences:

2x Samsung 173plus screens (external power supply) - dead silent

Samsung 226bw - mild buzz only heard from behind from 2-3".

Dell 2407HC - first two were disgracefully loud, and had to be returned. The third one has a mild buzz, but acceptable. It disappears at 100% brightness (which is retinal piercing..), presumably related to the backlight. A nice screen though.

I recommend the Apple Cinema display. No power supply or inverter (apparently) inside the display.

My Samsung 245b has a very annoying buzz. Not a good screen for silent computing.

Gateway 2185W - buzz when brightness is below 85 or 92 (observed on several samples), above this value makes iritating high-pitched sound, which i can hear (my solo box is quite silent). its a shame that only apple now makes lcds with external psu, all other put them inside, add a lot of went holes and dont care about users.

Third time I write this so this time it's a short-short version.

Had noise from Samsung CRT 959NF which also was blurry compared to TFT.
Replaced with Samsung 931BW which was very noisy and had poor viewing angles, also felt too small with 19" Widescreen.

Replaced with current Philips 200WP7ES 20.1" Widescreen which is completely silent and has a far better image quality than all my previous screens before it.

For best image quality, try to stay away from TN based panels.

I also have the Samsung SycMaster 245B. It makes a mosquitoey buzz, audible all the time unless you have music/game playing

Can anyone recoment a 1920x1200 24" LCD that is silent?

Samsung 940nw and another Samsung 940bw here, never heard a single buzz. They do have a lot of backlight leakage though, but other then that, they're working out great for me so far.

I'm using an Acer 2016WSD. It has a horrible buzz, but it's only audible from behind and to the side of the panel. When I'm sitting in front of it, I can't hear a thing.

Hey guys,

Found a great way to get rid of the noise coming from my Hanns-G 21.6" LCD : all I had to do was adjust the contrast and brightness settings until I could find a healthy balance of color accuracy and noise reduction that I could tolerate.

Before I corrected, it emitted an annoying hum whenever powered on. Now that I've lowered brightness/contrast and tweaked color levels a bit, I'm finding it to be dead-silent and displaying 100% acceptable image quality.

I can't hear anything from my two Dell 2007FP monitors.

My Dell 3007WFP has a whine when it's in stand-by.

All monitors connected to the same UPS... not sure if that's causing a problem.

I'm very happy with the performance and acoustics (or lack there of) of every viewsonic monitor ive ever owned. They are the seasonic of LCD manufacturers IMO.

I currently use a 19" VX922 for my wifes computer and a 23" VG2230wm. Response rate is better on the 19", but i cant tell a difference in world of warcraft, which is the only game i really play now a days. I did have to get a new video card to run the 23" at native resolution though. That poor 7600gs i had in it just couldnt keep up with a 1680x1050 native resolution.

Just some info: Acer AL2616W 26" LCD is silent if you turn brightness up to 100% (Contrast can be set to whatever) and then tweak the brightnesss to the desired level in the Windows Control Panel.

Also, the Samsung 27" LCD (model 275T) is NOT silent, it makes a slight buzz regardless of settings. It's pretty minor but I'm very picky and I can't stand any buzz at all. I tried two of them as well, both did it. The image quality is gorgeous though. The AL2616W is nice but not quite as nice. Not complaining though...!

Does anybody know of and other large LCD's (27+ inch) that are dead silent? I know the Apple 30" display is supposed to have an external PSU/converter so I'm guessing that ones silent, but it's very expensive.

My recent monitor ordeal:
HP w2207 - silent and nice picture, but I don't like the shiny, glossy screen (if you live in a small space and can't find room for both a mirror and a monitor, this could serve as a good combo).
Samsung 245BW - nice picture and only the bezel is glossy, but the bezel is thin & not too distracting. But noisy. If you like the sound of 1,000 angry wasps, this is your monitor!
Hans G 28" - acceptable picture, but noisy. More of a hum than the Samsung, but still too noisy for me (the genius who built the silent pc and now can't find a new monitor!)
Viewsonic ?2226w (21.6") - poor picture and very noisy.
My old monitor, a Viewsonic VA912b spoiled me. Looked great right out of the box (and still does) and never made a peep!

Just bought 28" HF289H from BestBuy. All works great, except the humming noise from the back. The noise is low-pitched, like a masquito. I had an Acer X243W before, there was a high-pitched buzzing sound, which could totally disappear if brightness is set to 85 above. The HANNSpree is much better, but the brightness/contrast change does not affect the humming noise, that be heard within 3 feet in silent room. Not sure if I should get an exchange or not. Any suggests are welcome.

I thought all you people were paranoid when you said that your LCD's made a noise but I experienced it last night.

I've had my Dell wfp2407HC for 3 months and never noticed anything except the heat that it generated. For that reason i turned down the brightness hoping it would reduce the heat (i can't definitely say it did) and have reduced the noise in my pc so that my GP drive is the loudest component in my pc. Anyway it makes a very audible buzzing sound.

I would say unusable brightness settings are between 10 and 75 where it sharply goes from inaudible to audible. buzzing dissapears in standby mode. I've settled on 80 and reduced brightness in my video card setting.

It's not an incredibly loud noise but i had my brightness on 35 which seems to be close to it's max loudness and my pc is close to silent and it was 3am

I will have to take back my claim of the Samsung 940nw being totally silent. After playing with brightness a bit, it seems it will give that annoying hum, especially at the 50% brightness mark.

Hope the following info help other readers, since I've got lots useful info form this blog. I just exchanged another HANNspree HF289H, no more hum noise, at whatever settings, complete silent. Highly recommed. Now I finally got a great monitor I like. My next step is probably to get even quieter laptop. For now, I think I will be able to live with this great monitor for at least a few years. Good luck to everyone.

My Samsung 245B is absolutely silent, it is also a fantastic screen that I would reccomend to anyone, 24-bit (true) colour, fast response time 1920x1200, high contrast, height adjustable, DVI.

Absolutely no noise. Even within 1cm, nothing. Excellent picture quality.

It's fairly old, and doesn't use even DVI for input, but I do not see myself switching to anything until this thing dies.

BenQ FP93GP is totally silent despite its built-in PSU.

On the other hand my newer Samsung 971P in quiet times is really annoying faintly squeaking at frequencies 200, 400, 500 Hz and similar.
And it's got external PSU (which hums similarly BTW, but quieter)!

So external PSU is not always a solution.

Can you confirm 971P is noisy in general?
Or is mine a faulty unit?

My HP LP1965 is silent so far, can't hear any noise from this unit. I did have an issue after around 3 years with Samsung 191t+ making buzz/humming sound, don't recall any noise when I first got that LCD.
