Are AMD CPU shims really necessary, or are they there just to make sure you don't crush your CPU? Do they affect cooling at all?

There's two kind of people ... the shim believers and the non believers.
The shim believers will utter nonsense about how much their temps improved, whereas the smart non believers wall say it's utter bulshit.

So, I guess you are a non-believer. I am too. It has the potential to lower the amount and pressure of contact with the CPU. Unless you are totally horrified of crushing the die, avoid them.

The shim is there to prevent you from crushing the core. Nothing more, nothing less.

I only crushed one core in my life, and that was because my motherboard and heatsink tumbled down the stairs along with me.
