VIA C3 Nehemiah

Post by hutts » Sat Jan 25, 2003 9:08 am

Just wondering if the EPIA-M boards support an easy way of underclocking the C3. I know it sounds funny, but I'd like to get one of the new Nehemiah core based C3's with an EPIA-M and possibly undervolt it/clock it down to 800 or so to reduce heat.

Is it possible?

Hutts.

Not AFAIK. It doesn't run that hot and the new fan is pretty quiet. You could replace the whole HSF easily enough if you wanted.

Underclock a C3?
I guess if you wanted to take the fan off a stock heatsink it would make sense. I bet just putting the biggest copper monster that would fit would achieve the same objective. The SLK800 have a very small base so it should fit on the C3. 5V a good sized 80mm vent fan on the back of the computer with a shroud leading to the heatsink for a little airflow and you will have it down. The C3 produces only 11 watts, it would be really easy to cool.

Ok guys....thanks for the replies.

I haven't had much experience with modern cpu coolers for sockets. I'm still stuck back in the slot days. If the processor really is that cool, then why do they put a stupid stock fan on it when it's supposed to be a quiet product?

Why not just ship it with a large copper heatsink? Price?

Price mostly, both for manufacturing and shipping.

Fans are also like cheap insurance, even if the board is mounted in an environment without sufficient airflow the fan will move the air around enough to keep it from cooking itself.
