Fan location in regards to filter

Post by happyhd2 » Mon Oct 27, 2008 1:30 am

Hi

Not sure this is correct part of the forum, if not, please move it.

As showed in picture, I want a fan to suck through a filter, but I am unsure where to place the fan in regards to the filter. In the picture I've drawn 3 options.

1.Perpendicular on filter
2.Paralell
3.Diagonal

What I am worried about is mostly adequate airflow.

Btw, the filter in question is a 3M filtrete filter, how much "fan power" is needed to suck through it ? (Hard to say I guess, but maybe someone on this forum have tested..).

Make the filter surface area a multiple of the cross-sectional area of the fan and you shouldn't worry too much about fan power. I'd go for something similar to option 1.

Thanks for the reply, I initially wanted to go along option 1, assuring that others have the same view.

Hi,

I really don't believe it make any difference. I go with whatever is easiest to build.

I think the air filter media that Bluefront posts about is the same spun-glass filter media I use.

It's quite good for noise-isolation directly in front of the fan. I think the 'pleated surface' helps a bit, by providing most of the media surface at a 45-degree plane relative to the front face of the fan. The actual media thickness is about 1/8" thickness fiberglass backed by soft wire reinforcing mesh. The actual surface area, due to the pleating, is larger than for non-pleated media.

If I'm seriously listening for it, I can still my front fan start up and also very faint seek-noise from my suspended drive, but it's really minimal.

If I knew a better solution, I'd post about it.

Hipe this helps!
