have much lower spl - around 11- 15.
the vx lowest is 21.
how is that there is so much of a difference? are they really ~6db lower?
Pretty much. Most 20~25 dBA/1m measurements taken in the old live room are usually only 1-2 dBA lower in the anechoic chamber. The VX might measure 19-20 dBA/1m but not any lower. The newer ones really are that much quieter. I have an Antec CP-850 on the test bench right now that's barely registering 12 dBA/1m at 65W load. This thing would also measure 18-20 dBA in the live room with the old gear; the noise floor of both the old test gear and the old room are too high to really gauge the new super-quiet PSUs.

Thanks for commenting on this Mike, I was wondering the same thing myself when reading the latest Nexus review.

Will there be some future tests (in the chamber) on Corsair or Seasonic PSUs? specifically 450VX or 500-550 S12/M12?

We can't go backwards. Really. The pressure to keep moving forward to newer products is incredible. It's something of a miracle when we do go back occasionally and retest something.

But the products reviewed more than say a year ago -- chances are they are not going to last much longer in the market anyway, and we'll continue reviewing new things, so....

thanks for the reply.
incredible that they got so much quieter!
the vx is pretty quiet (not as much as i would like).
also, the modu+82 that was tested was a 625w, is the 425 has the same noise character? maybe in compression between the 430vx and the 425 modu the difference in noise isn't so big?

you sometime do revisit old hardware, like fans, HS and cases. but i guess reviewing an old psu isn't worth it?

Not really. PSU testing the way we do it is a huge amount of work. Often days if something goes slightly amiss.
