I've bought Pro82+ 625W version and after replacing box cooler on my CPU it turned out that this PSU is not that quiet.

Perhaps my PSU is broken or something, but its noise is nowhere similar to recordings from the review of Modu82+ 625W. Despite 500RPM readout, rattling is clearly audible. I can hear no air "whoosh", but that rattling and something that sounds more or less like very old sleeve bearing. It sounds really bad as for 500RPM. I can hear it from around 6-7 meters, when the windows and case are closed.

It's not very noisy, but I can clearly hear it in my room (AC Freezer 7 Pro at 1000RPM, 3x AC Fan 3 at 1100 RPM, GeForce 8800GTS 512, Samsung F1 with Scythe anti-vibration and 160GB Hitachi with custom silencing). I can barely hear noise of other components in my computer over this PSU. When I stop the fan, for a second, this noise disappears.

I have no idea what to do in this case. Swapping the fan was said to be a bad idea. Besides, I live in Poland, where RMA and customer support in general is really bad (but I haven't contacted Enermax so far). I paid around $215 (converted to USD), what is considered a good price, but still it's a lot for me.

I have a spare PSU from my previous computer, but I don't know if I should RMA it. Is there a possibility that Enermax service in Poland will keep this PSU for long time and at the end will tell me that it should work like that and will charge me for unnecessary service operation? (I had such situations, but not with Enermax)

Hi Ven, did you ever get your problem solved? I am having the same issue, my unit's fan rattles and this can be heard from up to 5 meters away.

Should I RMA my unit? I got it last week.

Sorry for asking a junior level question for a professional guys like you all.

@Compddd: Make sure that there isn't anything touching the fan blades as they rotate. This could explain the loud rattling noise.

Regarding the 425W model, keep in mind that the fan is set to increase its rpm as the load % increases, so whether the fewer watts model will work in higher rpm, thus more noise, really depends on your PC build and its power consumption..

does anyone have any more info on the 425 or 525 models yet? about to plonk down on a new system and need to know if the 625 is worth the 32% premium (here in aus) over the 525. :)

What model was tested? The Enermax site lists the EMD525AWT as being an 525W version (as the name would imply).

I would assume the part number on page 1 of the review is a typo. Page two contains this picture with a different model number.

So, whats best, this one or the new "Enermax Revolution85+" series?

85+ sounds better then 82+ :)

As always, best is always relative. Yes, the Revolution 85+ has a higher peak efficiency. But the Modu/Pro+ do better at low loads. Take the efficiency graph from AnandTech's review of both...

Emermax Revolution 85+ Efficiency
Enermax Modu/Pro+ Efficiency

At 200W, efficiency is pretty close with Revolution at about 86% and the Modu/Pro at about 83/84%. Revolution is better above this. But below, the Revolution quick drops so that it's only at about 73% at 100W. Where the Modu/Pro are still at about 82%.

Since most PCs idle at 100W or less and spend most of their time at idle, the Modu/Pro would be better and should stay at minimal sound levels. But if you are building a big powerful system that will spend all of it's time at or above 200W, then the revolution would be the better choice.

thinking of getting the modu 82+ 425 watt version of this psu :)

anyone have that? was wondering how the noise levels were on the 425 watt versions, especially on load

Thanks in advance

Thanks for comparing them BillyBuerger!
I had a hard time comparing them myself.. :)
Neither the 82+ series or the 85+ series was available anywhere when my cousin ordered his computer parts though.. :(
I recommended a Seasonic M12 700W for him instead.
I hope that was a good choice even though its been around since 2006...

No, it is not. It reacts to temperature increase - at least according to my experiences with Pro82+ 385 W ;)

why did MikeC use an rpm monitor to find out what the fan speed was? why didnt he just plug in the rpm wire onto the motherboard ?

Greetings & welcome to SPCR,

Because the motherboard RPM monitor is often not correct. A direct reading of the fan is a sure thing.

I just got a Modu82+ 625W based on the SPCR review. It really is quite quiet... In fact, the fan doesn't even start up for many minutes when the system is started... it moves a little but doesn't spin up. I wonder if that means it's defective, too much friction? It settles down at 450-500 rpm when it finally does start up, though it does seem to ramp up to about 1000 rpm already at 200- 250W. This is in a P180, with the psu mounted with the fan up, so it should get ambient air... I wonder if the airflow is better with it down... Even at 1000rpm it's still very quiet though.

In any case, I noticed that the connector layout in the manual does indeed show which connectors are hooked up to rails 12V2 and 12V3. Maybe this is new, or it was missed in the review since it has the usual "if it has more than one rail it would be nice to know which goes where" comment.

Another thing I noticed is that sometimes the motherboard reports the fan rpm as 20,000rpm even though I can see the fan is still turning very slowly. I wonder if this is a case of the fan turning so slow it wraps some counter so it looks like the period is very small? Has anyone else noticed this issue?

My Pro82+ 385 W fan starts spinning from the beginning (yes, the minimum rpm is 450). It's not quiet at 1000 rpm, but it's not very bad. There's some bearding noise but on low rpm it's unnoticeable from where I sit.
My motherboard reports rpm correctly (at least without such issues like you described).
In my Antec Solo at idle it usually spins at 490 - 530 rpm depending on ambient temp (from 23 to 25 centigrade most of the time) and my activities. The fan is quiet. I wonder how adding another Fander on the intake will affect PSU cooling.

I have a E8400 and undervolted & underclocked at idle PowerColor HD4850 PCS+ (It dumps hot air into the case unfortunately).

noise

Post by syrian_gamer » Fri Jan 30, 2009 2:00 pm

Hey guys, i just ordered this psu. and i got it 2day. Very nice looking box. However it seems louder then the Corsair HX620w :S that and the cables are very stiff so it makes it very hard to have good cable management. But most of all, it seems louder then the corsair

Using Speedfan it indicates that my PSU fan is running at 524 RPM. which is low, but some how sounds louder then it should? I dont know i guess it just makes a weird whining sound, which perhaps in terms of DB is quiet, but to me just sounds much more noticable. What do you guys think? Should I rma it? go back with corsair? im so confused right now :? Give me some guidance oh wise SPCR readers

*edit* ok so i unplugged all my fans in my computer, and the noise was coming from my hard drives. So i unplugged my fans and hard drives, and the psu fan was pretty much in audible. Im wondering if it was because i had no more fans and my 2 hard drives (+ 1 dvd drive) were all unplugged, the load was reduced, and thus the speed was reduced:? what do you guys think? i guess i would have to try it with linux on usb with nothing hooked up and just see how that runs.

May not be the fan. Most probably the noise you're hearing is some electrical noise.

I recently bought a Pro82+ 385W in the hope to make one of my silent rigs quieter but it buzzes louder than all of my Seasonics ... even with the power switch on the PSU set to off (with the mains left on of course).

how do you have your PSU set to off but your system still on? :?

No, the entire system is off.

The power switch on the PSU is 'off' but the switch on the wall is 'on'.

Try blocking the fan (do it gentle) with everything else plugged.

If the PSU is making any sort of noise when switched off, there's something wrong with it. I'd get it replaced.

I'd like to do that but shipping it back to Amazon (from Singapore) doesn't make financial sense. :(

I made some test's today with 625w and noticed the same rattling as ven did and it indeed sounds like very old sleeve bearing.. allso found out that fan grill resounds alot.. taking it off decreased that rattling with 3 meters..

How are the acoustics of the 525W model compared with the 625W model?

I have had the modu82+ 625W for about 7 months now, and since the 1m mark it has had a dull grinding noise coming from the fan. You can actually hear the fan spin up and down. Recently it has degraded into a sort of persistent 'chirping' noise, which is driving me insane. Contacted Enermax support just now, we'll see how that goes.

RMA'd

Post by lutorm » Fri Jan 22, 2010 11:07 am

I finally RMA'd my PSU due to the fan not coming on all the time when starting from cold. Unfortunately the one I got back has a much louder fan, with a low grinding-type noise which is totally noticeable with the case closed even at minimum rpm. Kind of disappointing.

Distributor that supplied mine stopped dealing with Enermax, so I got money back. Then I bought Corsair HX 650W. In general it's louder, but the noise is very constant, no noticeable pitch, no rattling. It's just better.

For my new rig, I got Seasonic M12D 850W and it wipes the floor with 82+.
