When both are placed on the Havik 140, the noise signature acquires an odd pulsing type sound audible at 7V and above. ...the speeds of the two fan samples were very close, within 30~40 RPM of one another.
This is known as a beat tone http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beat_%28acoustics%29

I think Lawrence is correct in calling the phenomena as intermodulation; beat frequencies are a specific instance of the more general concept.

Am I alone in feeling that ~3½ years seems like a short life for what I assume is the fan?

Short for a server class fan which can be expected to run constantly. While towards a decade for most home systems. How many here don't tend to swap out fans every 4-5 years anyway? ;)
