Hardware is:

• AsRock K7S41 Motherboard
• AMD Sempron CPU @ 2000MHz (200x10)
• Stock heatsink + 80mm Papst 12db @ 7v ~1000rpm
• Seagate Barracuda 7200.7, 80GB
• DVD/RW
• Antec SLK3700 case and power supply.

Total cost ~ $300
Modding cost, $10 (Papst fan)

What I have done:

- I replaced the fan on the heatsink with a Papst (12db) 80mm fan, running at 7v.
- Stock 120mm chassis fan running at 5v, almost noiseless.

Is it quiet? Yes I think so, but far from silent. PSU must be exchanged.

To Do:
- Maybe some damping.

The CPU idles at about 50C (42C with Papst @ 12v). The Seagate is at about 35C. Inside temp rest at around 32C.

Egg carton

Not sure about the rubber bands holding the HSF... they tend to stiffen and become brittle over time, especially when exposed to heat. If they snapped and your fan dropped off when you weren't around to hear the clunk, you could be looking at a toasted CPU...

That's pretty much what I was thinking - it's like the opposite of my 3700AMB.

Yep, very clean install. There's something inherently pleasing about such clean installs. Am I the only one who enjoys looking at such pictures?
About the heat though; isn't 50ºC at idle a bit on the high side?

Your right. I replaced the rubber bands with the same type of bands that holds the HDD. They are stronger but still very elastic.

Now I'm dreaming of a passive PSU...

Yeah, 50C is a tad high but as we all know, heat can't be heard Anyway, I only use it for browsing the internet and music, at 12v the temp drops to 42C.

What is the utility for the Egg carton ???

It's like... egg crate foam... without the foam bit. Does it help at all?

That's what I'd like to know as well... I'm presuming sound dampening but I'm not sure these cardboard bits do that at all. Mr Tell, please live up to your name and do... tell

The egg-carton special pattern helps to break up standing waves, but no - the difference isn’t huge, or very audible. I just put them there for testing.

Wow, very nice and clean! I have two questions:

1. Are the IDE-cables secured to the motherboard floor with tape?

2. I can't see the 12v wires to the HDD. Did you put it under the IDE-cable?

3. Where are the redundant wires from PSU?
