Some recent Changes :)

Post by BenW » Sat May 28, 2005 8:01 am

Had a dell system and recently changed the case, motherboard and cpu cooler. Had it running until the motherboard stopped working. Now i've got it working again you can have some pics :!:

Specs are:
Silverstone TJ-04 with cut out grills and stock fan at 12V
Gigabyte 8IPE1000 Pro-G
2.26Ghz P4 Northwood (533FSB) with XP-120
Samsung Spinpoint 160GB 8MB Cache with JVC
Samsung DVD/CDRW combo
Sapphire Radeon 9800Pro with ATI1 cooler
Sounblaster Live 5.1
SilentX 300W PSU

Sound is an issue at the moment, i'll be suspending the hard drive in a few days and in the next month or so i'll be getting 2 nexus fans and 5v them and some Arctic Silver 5. Might get a Seasonic S12 430W whilst i'm at it

Let me know what you think :)

What component make the loudest sound - case fan, PSU, or Hdd?

Does your case fan come with a fan control unit (I bought same fm121 fan in retail - it comes with a fan control unit) - I didn't see it in your pic. If you run fm121 at 12v. it surely is loud. Try putting a fanmate in, at lower voltage this fan is quite good on noise. If your room temp is not too bad, you might be able to get away with one case fan cooling Hdd and XP-120.

Btw, very nice case and clean cable management too. :)

Loudest component at the moment is case fan followed by ATI1 on the GPU

The case fan is an everflow, R121225BL which is rated at 21 or 23dB and it runs at 2000rpm under load, 1800 idle.

What are your CPU temps with full load? I'm curious, because I too have an XP-120 but with my Prescott 3.4... I noticed you were using it passive style... which is really cool.

Also, what size is that vent in the front? Is that a 120 hole or a 92?

Erm, cpu is currently at 1.35 volts and its a hot day in england for time of year so ambient is probably about 22 at the moment. Idle temp is 34 and i'll get a load temp soon and post it

About 2 weeks ago the cpu was at 1.2 or 1.25 volts and was 29 idle and 39 load but ambient was much lower

Front hole is 120mm.

Having the rear fan near the heatsink seems to work quite well, i tried the system with rear fan at 5v (When ambient was much lower) and idle temp was similar but load shot through the roof

EDIT: Load is currently 46C

Have you removed the air duct grille? At the same time relocating the I/O assembly to a 3.5” bay? (Silverstone module would be ideal). These mods will significantly increase air-flow.

I have removed that grill at the bottom but not the ports, tbh i don't want to move them because i don't where else i'd put them without spoiling the looks.

Well, its just past the hottest part of an english day. I've been running defrag for a while, had music playing for a few hours, downloading in bitcomet, few IE open and the calculator.

I turned the fan down to 7v and reapplied the thermal paste because i didn't when i last put the heatsink back on

The system is a lot quieter but i still need to suspend and replace the fans. Idle at the moment is 37C

Yup, i'll be doing that in about a months time when i get some free time

System isn't too bad with the fan running at 7v, planning to get a switch so i can flick between 5v and 12v and mount it on the side of the table for easy access :)

Well, suspended the hard drive today and use cable ties on the fan with some foam between.

Put a lump of foam on the bottom of the case as well, was in the motherboard case so just threw it in

Suspending the hard drive made a huge difference to seek and a bit to idle. Can still just hear it seeking but idle i cant really tell

Fan mount and foam made no noticable difference

Just made some more changes!

I've now got 2 nexus 120mm fans in there at 12v and a thermaltake schooner on the graaphics card.

Braided and heatshrinked one cable (Hard drive to graphics card)

Suspended hard drive

Made a duct from cpu heatsink to rear case fan

I'll get some pics up later
