I am hoping it will...
100k hours... just a few more years. :)

I dug into an older p4 dell something I got for free, it had some case problems, turned out to be a serious error, nothing was any good, even the power supply suffered. Bad metal or something... too lively to stay "colm". So it sat for some years.

the unique dell heatsinks with the clips, no springs, rather hefty chunk of aluminum.

took it all apart, ground off the studs and slapped it on my 875pbz. I have not removed the mobo since installing in 2007(?)
This may have run all this time by not running full speed...conservative runtime. Big cpu for its day, I still encoded videos etc.

So..
another reverse duct is made (will get photos) out of the original dell to go with the dell heatsink, stainless steel to bridge to the fan in fancy shaping.
and I opted to get some "k5pro" from greece for thermal compound.

Already things to notice..the memory with all four banks for some time now, is much faster than I never experienced. the dell heatsink is drawing from that area.

I laft off with this memory as the fastest timings in the world, all models after this generation slowed way down. Web pages pop right into the led screen.

I have this on a very large fan as I have photos in previous posts...the hack job.

will get more photos when I dig into it again for the new compound.

here is the modified xp90 with 72500 hours. Now retired. As original, it would not have made it. I added aluminum and 3000psi epoxy years ago...on a 2.8e p4 is where this one began, running it ever since.

Image

note, the pipe openings at the bottom did something metallurgically interesting.

Image

the spring clips, still sitting perked up and parallel...8 years or so. Many hours.

Image

the bottom with my home made goo still on it. This will never have a use again... went a long time, and still workable.

thermal compound experimenting

I usually leave this to the pros, but I am having fun.

home made 1:
dielectric grease from accel hot rod plug wire kit
graphite
aluminum
diamond jewelers bit for the fine grind

idle 145F , loaded, into the 180s F

homemade 2:
veggie oil
rubed pencil lead on cpu and heatsink until shining

idle 145F, loaded 176F

home made 3:
valvoline high temp synthetic wheel bearing grease.
looks like graphite color, consistency of whipped cream..
will get back on the numbers for that one. I may not try it, as the bond for grease is for life, cpu don't need that.

I have some real stuff on the way, 2 versions
1 is 4.5 w/mk from greece k5pro
the other is traditional, 2 to 3 something.
I also found an 8 w/mk called mx4...too much money.

I have found, the cpu is after slippery as much as the transfer.
silly games...

I am also done with arctic silver. I have declared it a false glory... shoulda swapped that out years ago.
the factory pad scraped off left in a less than perfect pile with air gaps in it does better than arctic silver. Not sure why, and don't care.

my laugh out loud outcome of the past 15 years is the 2 drops of veggie oil on the cpu , after rubbing it with a pencil.
I do believe there is some good stuff, it would be a gel form in the beginning and stay that way. Am looking forward to the k5 pro.. something different.

the other thing I may do is mix the traditional oxide silver looking stuff with the k5 pro... keep it slippery.

the hoax with arctic silver:

the temps are down, and the cpu isn't shaking its thing to move data. Sick joke. the thermal value is very high however.. credit deserved for that part of it.

giving it a rest

I have not shut down in more than 8 years, for more than a few days...and that was to move to the 3 different places the pc and I have been.
I have a big asus led screen and my keyboard and mouse hooked up to my lap top, and straining it to demand the big monitor.

I have 7 different combos of heatsinking compounds coming
dimond ic7 (2000?! w/mk)
gold (3.2 w/mk)
silver (3.5 w/mk)
k5pro (from greece) (4.5 w/mk)
normal old school grey (1.2 w/mk)
normal old school white silica gel (1.2 w/mk)
silicone thermal pads, 1 and 2mm (3.2 w/mk)
copper shims variety

I am doubting the ic7 claim, and the thermal pads, but the ic7 did come in first or second everywhere I checked, and where it ws actually in the long list of choices we have today.
I have other items not for my cpu listed, I put the accelero combo together on my vid card some years ago. Not much of that is oem either.. the copper may have a spot there, as well as the white version of compound. My passive ati 3650 loved a tight squeeze, and I gave it one. Not a single problem since install. Just going to get a peek and fulfill what I wanted to do a few years ago.

I have never had this build as oem heatsink or compound, as I put it all together myself in pieces.
I shutdown today, no heatsink compound, my homemade attempts are bad. I have some quick deliveries on the way.
first time in 8 years or more.

For comparison, this dual core laptop fullspeed ahead is twice as slow, except for the number of handles...
I love the last of the old p4.

Am contemplating mixing all of the compounds together, as oem tested by toms hardware was the winner for this generation of cpu...will get the right ingredients in there somehow. :)

An interesting event for this season, as maine is one of the coldest spots in the world.. the el nino stuff creates big battles. the scariest is when the air is warm, and maine continues to be its deep freeze, not caring about the air. Very bad memories for lively el nino. Getting to the point...my p4 is prophetic as an old 80s subaru, it reels in the winter before it happens. I knew to get after the heatsinkage. Should survive, am confident.

I also put the dsl modem and wall jack on the apc ups.

video card dismantled

looking back, I found october 8th 2009 was the install for the ati 3650.
more than 50000 hours later... I have decided to refresh the cooling that I had to make most of back then.
ran all this time, no problems. another note is how long this self cleans. Nothing nasty anywhere at all.
If this makes it...I will be posting again Dec 25th, still a goal of 25000 hours. I cannot shutoff the machine again for any more than a couple of hours to make the goal.
(that was oct 8 2009.)
A quote I laughed at, I laughed at myself. :)

Image
does anybody remember the ati rage 128? My first was n LT pro, 1997. A whopping 8mb of ram. Made good use of an old heatsink. Still going to use it, cleaned right up good. This is the avivo chip. I still use it. Not often..but do.

Image

here is the gpu side.

here is how this cleaned up. Easy going. It is going to be even better with silicone thermal pads and 4 choices of compound. Should be together by Friday of this coming week.
I did add some things that were not very effective 6 years ago, first install. I must have had a low stock pile of thermal related pads and compounds. Kept going anyway, cool as can be. Taking advantage of the shutdown, might as well get the card refreshed as well.

more than 50000 hours on the ati 3650... no fan, ever. Never had one.
Image

one more mod, as this was always far from overheating, even back when the folding at home ran for 24 hours a day. I had read of this, must have been here at SPCR someplace. This still has an edge beyond vid card, and a lot where air goes by. All reverse cooled and convection. I have at most felt this at luke warm, full speed ahead...725mhz.

This generation is already gone it seems, but the pentium 4 has many millions less transistors than the vid card. this video card is what inspires me to keep it going. Very fast old p4... huge load taken off with the big vid card.

Windows 7 was actually the first sign of the o.s. itself truly using it, to aid in cpu relief.

just kept on trucking.
Should be better than ever this week. I have found the silicone thermal pads are more than 3 times the thermal conductance, than when the date of this pc began. Good time to update, clean things up.

A funny note.. I had called this one prophetic with the weather sometimes. A day after I mentioned it, the deepest hurricane in history smashes mexico. I found the cpu was made in costa rica.

Man made precision, it knows where it comes from, it knows when its walking path has an interruption. I actually learned that from my welding steel hobby.. applies to other things as well.

back to basics
I ran this long enough, I forgot the baseline origin to inspire me to increase cooling quietly.
My first event was a p2 350 in 1998, and I did join up here at SPCR from the beginning. I like to mention that often. I came here with a 900 athlon at 1013 mhz. I built that one in 1999.
This user name I have now is not my original. I guess it was 2001 for this place.

Image

Anyway, back to deciphering this one, as I have time.
I quickly understood this time, ATI wants to roast like the pentium 4, and that does add a smooth flow. I did not realize that from my other builds. Still learning. The goal now, with every version of compound known on the way, is to drop it all down together.

the cpu is getting a 3.2 valued thermal pad with hole in the middle for k5 pro or ic7 compound (those are up and over 4 on the conductance).
I am going to resemble that exactly for the vid card. I am guessing that will be the winner.
I also realized the big p4 loves the big hefty heatsink by Dell. My p2 350 had the biggest ever shipped in history.. so no surprise for this one. It likes the big chunk of alloy.

Got it up and running in minutes, I am here with the old pc right now, remembered why I loved it.
Will get some good photos of this 73000 hour runtime on final compile.

A few more days of deliveries, and back to experimenting. The vid card likes its chopped off accelero, no problems at all. In fact response times and launching things is faster.

This is with the 1 dollar worth, ten packets of old white stuff at the heart of everything. :)

vid card update

I got the silicone pads, ic7, gold stuff, and cheap stuff..
the ic7 is very nice. The cpu loves it. The vid card likes the thermal pads, due to the strange design.. it cannot sit squred up. the thermal pads gather that and let it run.
This leads to why I may be removing it for good.

On day one of install, 6 years ago..I was forced to wait quite awhile to get this up and going. In fact a particular monitor, an old CRT, kicked it into action. Been running on that one kick ever since. 3 different monitors. It just stayed going after the initial kick on.

But after cleaning and thermal compound changes this past week, the vid card does not want to get up and go now.
The synch usually comes around after a few minutes, and I have gone as far as a few days.

This one seems to be all done.

I did find another one for 30 dollars, no avivo...and brand new. The same chip without the multiple speeds, just set at 400, and also fanless cooled.
this old p4 would like that at 400 mhz.

so, complaints aside, it was a very good run for the money..more than 55000 hours. I hardly paid anything for it, as there was a proven heatsink problem before I even got it. They were getting big dollars just for vid cards outdone today, just 6 years ago. I remember thinking it was used when I opened the box...it was supposed to be new or refurbed.

So, the old beast is pumping more heat than ever, and will be back to normal within a week or so.

Will get some last photos of the card setup, as it is all custom in the cooling, with a kick in the butt without instructions, but some luck. It ran all this time.

Some other notes..
I swapped in a new maxell 2032 battery while it was down, not much else.
Power supply needed nothing. I did something extremely custom for insulating that one as well... hint: the windows in my room needed to stay open for 2 days. :) (automotive two pat urethane..medium hardener)

all else is good. I noticed the power consumption is down quite alot..so this was caving in at the vid card for several years. I simply kept paying bills, assuming something else was eating up kilowatt hours.

the lap top got some ic7, and am here with it. I have it setup like a home computer, big monitor, and keyboard, mouse. Dell d620. Not easy to take apart. Glad I did, the fins were clogged, and the heatsink compound was hard as concrete.

looking forward to my old giant up and running again...using a few less watts.

back up and running.

Image

A trick for the 875pbz is to remove card entirely. It will beep 9 times, which they claim to never use...reboot again via hardware switch and it gives the real beep codes.

This one showed the memory failed on the vid card. No read write video memory. 8 beeps.

as it turns out , the new one that arrived in the mail is nearly identical. I put the top side little heatsink on, which they do not ship with, the g5pro from greece, and slapped it right back in. One thing I will not do this time is use the ati overdrive. No need for it.

away it goes. Everything desynched, security, software, time. Fresh cmos battery as well.
Funny enough, zero change in cooling. Not a single degree.

final build

I opted to swap monitoring software for "speedfan", lo and behold it found another fan speed to monitor at the "vreg" fan spot. That is one that hides behind the cpu, in front of case fan.

I could not get below 145 idle temps, as usual..and swapped things around.

the cpu fan plugin is now an evercool with its own thermistor to help change speeds slowly. It is a big one, but running very gentle. That is actually the case fan as well. It does not run like its original version of this evercool, with the same part number. Very quiet. 140mm. Evercool ec12025m12c. 4 watts max. Max rpm is 1340. it calms down to 1280. Always calm..bad choice of words there.

The psu monitor plug in is now at "vreg".. volts for cpu are very dynamical. That let out an odor, like a new item never used before..because it never has been used before.

Idle temps fall down slow to 136, max temp in the 180s F is still the same. Slower to get there. A lot more control by intels own plans , that I never used correctly.

case fan plugin is now empty...that is a plugin that was supposed to be optional anyway. The cpu plug in for fan was not, I did not use that correctly.
Now fixed...after 73000 hours of me.

away it goes, the last leap for this old p4. I love it to pieces. :)

The only stress software I had for this recent changing, something called "heavy load". It leaps the gpu in to 706fps, and slowly comes down to 500. It used to be at 500 all the time...every test. This is the dynamics I was looking for. The software revealed I did something normal for this old hot pc.

some upgrades

I was simply going to go for a full new build. core i7 3770 minimum. Not even ebay and "used" brought back a price range to get me over my past traumas of more than $5k in computers.

This one has been like therapy. The cost versus usefulness returned.
Win.

Image

Now at 74352 hours.. will be close to 75k by the time parts arrive.

I swapped my old parallel cable printer for a usb all in one, scanner copier etc.. thought of the hard drives still being bulletproof pata.
So, I browsed around and bought a pair of new wd160avgb sata2 for this aging 875pbz.

The hours will reset to zero, but I will add on where the pata is leaving off just for this long running thread.

I also found in the ECC logs at the bios level, the first errors ever, since 2008. "1 bit ecc error", it shows up in random intervals several days apart. It may be coming to an end..
sata will be inegredients for a next build. Gathering things now, as I build my own. Long time now. 18th year this year.

Alot of this box will go right back to use. The dvd roms are history as well..but doing fine for now. One piece at a time.

Image
between a paul bunyan statue and a gambling casino..poetic riddle I presume.

Some claim I have a math witch, and it does funny things with truth.
I do not believe in such things. Maybe it feels safer to my silence, goes along anyway.

sata installed. A pair of twins.
I kept the lower hour 80gb pata to act as a 12gb "system reserve". Those were a pair of 80s on the pata. Very stable drives. Something I remembered from an old compaq.. Needing a dvd rom was unimportant. Big system reserve hidden, added to boot menu. Dell uses that stuff too. Very handy. Glad to remember how to simulate it. It does need another computer to make the hidden bootable setup easier.

Image

some trouble with service pack 1 for win 7, but have been through this many times. Will give it some days. 8 years is a big runtime to make changes.

so now it is 4gb ecc ram, pata and sata all utilized. I have a portable dvd rom on the way, the 875 can boot from usb, but the hardware needs to be correct. It knows the difference between a usb reader setup to boot and a genuine usb flash. Today is a little different for that stuff..

If win7 service pack does not go correct with my unique setup, I'll dvd rom an install the regular way. It is quite handy to see "setup [ems enabled]" in the boot menu.. very fast, to go along with the os.

the southbridge, I placed a heatsink on with 3000psi epoxy years ago. I learned a busy sata connection makes that warm. Thought ahead a long time ago. Will see how much further this old dog can go.

a whole other world I never used..after 75000 hours.

final shutdown

I just shut down the antec holding the 875, started my lap top..
awaiting a xeon e3-1270, in a lenovo e30. Now in the mail.

Reasons to shutdown are simple. Multi core, not just multi-thread is really gaining momentum. The old stuff is now outdone.
TPM security/id measures, I actually use them. My old 875pbz has no options.

Software that was designed for duo core, those do great on the 1mb l2 cache of the pentium 4 3400. Those days are done. I stretched it to 10 years.. amateur programmer myself, I knew to wait.

Moving onto a xeon was long overdue. I have several computer hobbies. Gaming is not one of them. A machine with ISV indicates integrity, if you are a programmer. It must help in real world, and reaching out with what you have compiled.

My programming time stopped almost 10 years ago. I did make some novelty programs.. and hid them away. I may bring those back out. remake, and add changes. I made use of multi-threading within the first year of it. 2005 or 6.

if you are to be stubborn, be it the budget... advice from one who knows.
I must sadly advise:
Let the single cores go. Even if it was the biggest ever made.

been a long 10 years, it has been real.
This is post 101.

hahaha

of course I was kidding. The clock resolution must stay online, there is millions of computers counting on it.

I added the two sata, and got a bootable dvd rom from usb. Reinstalled windows 7..no pata hdd anymore. Long overdue.
so now it is twin sata western digital.
the 875 needs a cd/dvd rom in one of the patas to trick the bios into allowing the usb dvd to work at boot...but hey. That riddle is much simpler than some of the stuff I remember.

new drives at 140 hours..
past the 75000 hour mark by a few hours.
this will be my good backup machine.
The lenovo xeon has not arrived yet, looking forward to a good purchase... here is to hoping.

summary and future

Image

believe it or not, the vid card seems to be the lowest score. In real world it is just the opposite. The vid card carried this pc.

one last bench for the 75k anniversary...
another pc on the way, spotting errors already, just by photos. This custom antec case will be the mAtx builds for now on...xeon on the board is quite ok.
Given my own track record...

the xeon in this same case, will gain a humble .01% over statistics... but for me the win is not the performance gain, it is the stamina.
.01% on a modern xeon is half this pentium 4 cpus total score.

quite humble.
Enough said given 75k hours..and voluntarily shutting it down. The antec and I have many tear downs and details worked out. I do not want to park this case.

I am keeping the 875pbz in a safe spot, the mobo, hdd, memory.. it will come back out again. Still rummaging though some ebay deals on another antec mid tower, extra wide as antec gracefully does.

This should be the last day running this setup.
a new chapter starting tomorrow..
we all know how electrons and plans go for first runs.. wish me luck. The antec 2600 continues.

Measure the current and future pc power use. What little gains you might get/need in performance will be overshadowed by the vastly improved power consumption.

some good news..the antec stays together with the current build. I truly believe it is a modern historic.
even better news...

http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu ... 40+3.40GHz

Image

the xeon ebay deal was fantastic. Simple handle error in the case..some mismatched ram. The rest is the old rules I follow, I knew I'd gain... been playing this game since the 266, and p2 350.
Alot of stuff inbetween. Mostly intel.

hdd hours: 1754
darn near new inside..very clean.

So, my main machine is now a xeon... bone stock lenovo e30 thinkstation.

cpu score is 8670. Already beyond the average.
I do not even have my choice of ram bank in yet. I bet I hit 9000 eventually.

some tips for the lenovo:
1. shutdown onbaord lan, add a card down at the bottom pci
2. Add a second hard drive
3. Be sure bios is the last update (june 2014)

About all I have done thus far.. Very similar chores, almost 20 years now. This one is very large computing power in comparison. My biggest yet.

Silent Antec XEONly

This started with a power supply swap last night.. I found a +3.3 and +5 was missing on the lenovo oem PSU. I then deciphered, they did this for duo core and to keep cool. From there, witnessing a true four core monster come to life after the earthwatts 380 plugged in..
I brought it to 178F in testing..decided that was too warm.
I finally took it all apart to put in my antec case.

the lenovo case goes to the dumpster. :)

Image

lenovo e30 e3-1270 mobo

the rear case fan has a thermistor..big 140mm. I set that on the cpu.
All original is in use, except card reader and front audio. I did not want either.

I even have the antec usb and antec switches hooked up...hdd light and power.

away it goes. A whole new chapter.

I have 8gb ecc unreg unbuffered ram on the way.

it does very good.
I would like vid card on passive cool..but it seems to be a complex worker, 4 wire fan..and inaudible anyway. (Nvidia quadro 600)
To avoid any bios checks on the mobo fans, it needs two per lenovo specs.
I put the old case fan as the front, and left the cpu alone. Sails right through boot like oem lenovo.

the thermistor is right near the cpu now to actually throttle fan. Lenovos oem build had the thermistor pinned to the front of the case. (VERY weird - it had no function out there)

I just installed paired hynix ECC unbuffered, 8192mb. Ran it through the microsoft diagnostic and passmark testing. This is exactly the same speed as pc17000. Not sure why. Fastest ram n the world ...to 1 point of difference. Passmark counted it as 0% different. I did give the latest bios update..maybe they are letting it run free...big as it gets.

The ECC is single bit error checking, and verified up and running. Two more temperatures to monitor, I am a geek about that stuff. 103F is as hot as bank 1 gets. Needs no coolers.

One big worker. Very impressed. I dumped 6gb of video in the time line, 9 clips to speed up and edit for a timelapse.
Thrashed it around like a rag doll...and then took less than 5 minutes to encode.

I remember this being called Koyaanisqatsi here at spcr..
still up and running, since 2004. :)
the case date is 2003. The msi sticker is 10 years old, the board died in 2007.

The rear case fan started off at 80mm. I hacked it out for a very low amp arctic cooling at 140mm...
very quiet. It is rather funny to look at such a big fan with a tiny motor in the middle.
Very pleasant and gentle.
This case is also not factory paint. It is in this thread someplace, the work I did to it. 3000psi baked extreme 2 urethane, over a real metal filled paint from a 1987 Subaru (very rare one year paint code - has garnet in it).

this case would be quiet even if the cpu was screaming. Being down to 32nm today... wow. I need the power light to know it is running.

DDR memory.. coolers or not?

Something else I do not talk much of. A common question, and I do not like the young whippersnapper's answers.
Memory. I started off with less than 100mhz..the p2 350 on the new fast sdram 100mhz was amazing.

As time went by, I got into all of them. 533 (133), on and on. DDR came about, and then ECC on my 875pbz as an option for a home user.

Long story short...
Memory coolers to me, are not coolers as much as the silent keepers.
They stop interference, the smoking bacon from the kitchen frying pan, and they trap the tiny 1 something volt to move things along, protect the chip, spread a spectrum.
Image
I wanted to share, that I am once again amazed, by gaining 1% consistently over the pc4 17000 on the passmarks, just by installing my old ddr400 covers.
It is dead even without.
Wow.

I do not use thermal tape. The tiny layer of the double sided tape is all that is my "coolers".
The only error I have found from coolers, is the thermal tape being crazy thick. This makes a very tight squeeze from the coolers. Literally squashing a chip to death.

The gentle placed coolers was an ingredient in the 75000 hour runtime, on my 875pbz. The only ECC bit errors to show up in the log, was me not pushing in a usb cord enough for my hp printer.

I won't mention part numbers, or play the spam game...
they are all the same.

I hope this helps answer, with an aging opinionated pc builders reply. :)

I do like the unbuffered ECC. They ought to be proud for that engineering.

cooling custom..lenovo e30

got this all squared away. A summary of the cooling:

four wire plugins work for this mobo,
I used the factory lenovo case fan as the front in the antec.
An f12 arctic cooling is now the back fan (4 wire).
For some odd reason, I got a fan beep error upon the arctic cooling fan. I found on the net to simply hit f1, then f10. Should leave me alone. It seems to do it after full shutdown once, then any reboots it does not.

Verified it is indeed throttled to the plugin thermistor, supplied by lenovo.

I also verified that the thermistor should be out front as they had it. That was very clever. We are headed to below zero, the case becomes the heatsink. No need for screaming fans. My 875 used to shut the fans down completely. This one gets close..crawling, but not off.
I misunderstood the placement at first..but it makes sense now.

The Antec earthwatts ramps up on its own as needed, as per usual.

This makes all 3 mobo spots PWM by lenovos own design, and the antec does what it always did.
I also added memory coolers as covers, this brought the temps of the two of them closer together, and max temp is 100F. Dropped 3 degrees.

Very quiet. Case closed. :)

one more followup..
power consumption.

Image

I can log onto the net, as my building has the electronic meters. Tells all the tenants, each their power.
The blue is the new numbers...on the xeon.

I guess the old p4 is dumpster bound..unless someone wants it cheap.

20 times more work can be done, and now this on the power charts. I stay up and running 24/7.

I'll check back in at the 10000 hour mark...should be 10.95 months from now. :)

This calculator is great, as it is over exaggerated.. they do not ask about the fans or even the bios speaker wattage.
I am using no more than a .25a, the other two are at .17 and .13a for the fans.
The speaker is now the Antec 2600amb case original..first use since the 13 years I have owned it. The original Lenovo speaker was a monster at 1.56 watts.
The antec is tiny, and gentle noise.

I guess it's been a year...and a couple of months.

Image

added 10000 hours to the runtime.
about 416 days.
the hdd had low hours, I knew it was the original.
the box hasn't even needed a cleaning.
no ionization monsters. Great power management.

I also upgraded my printing to laser by brother.
my old hp 940c.. I think I paid 5 bucks for it or something silly cheap..
kept it more than ten years.

I still remember having this case in 2003.
Been a long road.
Still on every day.

no complaints at all. Still a 3 fan system...same power supply, earthwatts 380. stays nice and clean and cool.
Replacing the fan was a must do last year.

I was just chuckling at the "void warranty if sticker removed" episode of linustechtips on you tube.
1999 was my first panic tear into a power supply.

will check in at 20000 hours.

on the older computers.. like the pentium 4 at 90watts.
no slow down. The float storm has negative and positive.
a good one would just gain the hairy things you clean out of fans.

a bad one is blowing light bulbs on the same circuit as your houses fuse panel.
I run my pc for several weeks at a time.

the newer machines are very good...more than ten years now.

I am going for adobe pro, continuing some good editing with the xeon. Even the video card adds some help.
that too took a long time. A processing vid card, in conjunction with balance on the cpu.

Nice stuff.
most newbies won't need to think much.. just get to work and play.

will check in sometime down the road.

update..
unlike me to give just a 4 month retreat from spcr.

the green board lenovo did not make it. I was cleaning and decided to take cpu out.
Welded pins plucked and bent..made a mess.
Still one of the greatest deals in my pc building history.
14240 hours..it started off at 1700.

So, I have a gigabyte mobo on the way.
It will be interesting to fulfill the rumor..
"ecc not supported".. but unbuffered, unregistered ECC may plug in and work anyway, simply act without ecc.
will see how that goes.

I found testing for the greenboard xeon swaps to gigabyte (and other aftermarket) to improve passmarks by 40%.. just by plugging it in.
Another realm of evidence keeping, that green boards suck.

will give details.

Gigabyte GA-B75M-HD3 LGA 1155

I also have a backup built, just waiting for the g3220 cpu and new genuine intel heatsink/fan. the mobo is an asus h81c-m.
using onboard graphic, 1gb of ram.. an old dell case.
sata western digital.
the old antec earthwatts 380 also got its new home there. Incredible power supply in excess of 100k hours.
now trucking on in the backup pc.

the new psu? Another earthwatts 380 of course. :)

by end of next week, will share the new build in the aging antec 2600 case.
it just might have gone by the 200k hour mark.. will do some digging.
170k hours.. it is certainly there.

I do not mention personal much.. but I am a disabled veteran.
My first build on this case was my first room rental, after being homeless.
the case and I have had 3 different addresses since 2005. I am now in official public housing...with a front lock.
I am an acknowledged veteran today.
The owner of that house, he took me in with his family living there. I felt right at home. We ate and cooked and did chores..

his name was leon.
He had some choice words when learning my story, and it picked me up.
I moved on, his house burnt down, he died before then.

I remember showing him my modern computer, he had never seen one.
I took his one and only picture (so he claimed)

This build is called King Leon the Xeon. In memory of my first build with this case.

back up and running

the greatest mobo swap in my 20 year history.
needed no reinstall, nothing..
I looked up at the monitor, no pc beeps..booting into windows 10.
Image

I laughed out loud.
needed nothing.
ecc unbuffered memory went right in.(just no ecc function)

fonts are noticably sharper, much faster runtime.. and cooler.

I even used the official backplate and heatsink for the big xeon.
my lan card
and the nvidia that came with the lenovo (great for editing large vids and making things)

I am impressed.

Image
king leon the giggle byte. :)

will check back in on the next eclipse..
2024.
