Another P180 ! nice and quiet ! :)

Post by bumthology » Tue May 29, 2007 7:44 am

After finding this site, it took me 2-3 weeks to build my PC to how i wanted it. Because of SPCR i decided to buy nexus fans, a p180, tried elastic HD mounting, bought a Seasonic 430w etc... This is the result of my pc atm. At first i was very dissapointed with the P180 but got it to a good level where i can just make out the sound of the HD from my bed 2 meters away.

P4 2.8ghz Northwood with Scythe Ninja
Intel D865PERL motherboard
1gb RAM
1x WD 160gb HD
1x WD 200gb HD (in scythe silent drive)
1x Samsung 500gb HD Sata
Ati Radeon 9800NP with Thermalright HR-03
Some fan controller..

FANS:
Front = 120mm Scythe + 120mm Nexus
Rear = Nexus 120mm
GFX = Nexus 92mm

CASE MODS.
Anglegrinded the fan metal holes.
Front lower chamber fan mounted to the front

TEMPS:
CPU in use now = 29-30c with 25c ambient
HD in scythe silent drive = 30c
HD on bottom chamber 27c (WD) and 23c (Samsung)

As most of you will know, most of my ideas have come from this site. Thankyou spcr... although my pockets a bit more empty now

Nice clean rig.
Well done! 8)
Maybe you want to close the holes around the Psu.This will decrease even more the Hd temp. :)

Good work!
What hard disks models do you have (more details are appreciated) and what do you think of their noise compared to each other?
tried elastic HD mounting
So what was your experience with this, you didn't like it?

I'm just a curious one.

I have actually got seagates i think.

ST3160023A
ST3200822A
HD501LJ

The samsung is definitely quieter, i think the others may be louder because of age. I remember buying a samsung barracuda long ago, and it was said to be the quietest HD around, and it was quiet.

I couldnt tell the difference when the HD were elastic mounted, because i could still here the hard drives spin and write.

Thank you for your interesting reply.
I my view you are a SPCR PRO. 8)
I really like your work. :D

I bet you will replace the Seagates with a new big silent HDD in the future to get it even quieter.

thanks for your comments,
pro? i think not, hehe
i did a lot of research and searched up possibly every thread regarding the antec p180 :)
Any info on your rigs?
I recently quietened a rig at work (which had a DELTA fan cooling a prescott) with my leftover antec fans.
I'm just another satisfied SPCR forumer :)

I was not aware you could relocate the tunnel fan in front of the drive cage. Any details on that? Since you can hear the drives, are you hearing them from case vibration or data transfers [seeking]?

you can hear the drives humming, i think its because of the platters spinning.
yea there was an old thread on here about doing it, so i thought it was possible and i had to give it a try.

I have the same problem: 49° :(. I'm going to tape those holes at the back of the case.

QUESTION: Do you also close the wholes that are on the side of the PSU too?

Greetings zikje
I have 2 Quite drives enclosures in the lower compartment. My current temp are:
hd 1-38C
hd 2-41C
Ambient temp 25-28C
I have also a nexus fan @700rpm blowing on the enclosures.
In my setup i did close all the holes around the psu.
Do you also close the wholes that are on the side of the PSU too
Which holes do you mean? :?:

You have two kindes of holes:
- the roster on the back of the case around the PSU
- PSU itself has some openings on the side

I'm talking about the latter. Would it be better to do that? Maybe it will force all air to go via the fan of the PSU. Maybe it will stop hot air from the PSU from going back into the bottom compartment from the case.

I'm also thinking about closing the first kind of holes (the roster). That probably would force the PSU to draw air from the front of the case and therefore cool my HD better.

Yes you have a point there, the most important thing in my experience is not to block the normal airflow. Some people say that it would be better so that the S12 would have a fan on the back of the psu (like M12 series that have an additional small fan on the back)so that air will pass and exit from the back.Generally a configuration with a fan on the back instead of the bottom will have a better airflow.
Yes i believe it will help but i don't know for sure in real life closing the psu holes on the side that is.
Hope i Helped some.

I have a Tagan PSU. And I turned it upside down so the 12cm fan is on top. We'll see. I can try it this evening.

I used to have an S12, but it went broke and I got a Tagan instead. Don't ask. So thx for pointing that out: I've updated my sig.

I taped all the holes but the HD is still pretty hot: 42° idle. After playing some CS it went to 51°. And after opening my case it didn't come down. I don't have any fan down below, only the fan of the PSU.
