quiet antec tx640b C2D build *UPDATED*

Post by jaldridge6 » Wed Jun 27, 2007 10:32 pm

New mobo as of 0704....

case: antec tx640b
processor: e6300 @ 2400mhz [400x6, 1.125V], scythe ninja B + 800rpm sycthe sflex SSF21D
psu: seasonic 380 + 800rpm sycthe sflex SSF21D
mobo: gigabyte p965-DS3
ram: 4x512 corsair xms2 ddr800
hd1: samsung 501LJ in scythe quiet drive on foam
hd2: backup samsung 501LJ in external Metal Gear USB case on foam
optical: sony IDE dvd burner
video: sapphire passive x550 256mb
soundcard: rme hdsp 96/32 pci
rear fan: 800rpm sycthe sflex SSF21D
monitor: dell 2407WFP
keyboard: das keyboard version 1
printer: canon pixma ip4000
headphones: http://www.gk-music.com ultraphones isolation headphones

It's very quiet. Absolutely zero vibrations unless I run the optical drive. I have to really sit still in order to hear the fans. everything is cool to the touch inside. Hd idles around 32-34C, and processor around 34-36C. Not the best temps, but they'll do. The computer is used primarily for professional audio applications.

I highly recommend the headphones I'm using as well. Anyone who wants absolute silence while listening to music should own a pair. They beat the competition [directsound, vic virth, etymotic, metrophones, shure ECx] hands down for isolatoin, comfort, and sound quality.

Looks good... not many people seem to use this case, but I like the look of it, and you've got it to work well. I must say, good work on the tidy cables!

I agree, this looks very quiet. Only three 800rpm fans. Good work. Hope you enjoy it. :)

I thought only CRTs needed cement blocks to support their massive weight? I guess you can never be too careful.

Those temps are fantastic in such a quiet setup. Nice work.

the block is because the dell monitor doesn't raise itself very high compared to most 24" monitors Ive tried. the samsung 244t and the hp lp2465 both go much much higher, but i liked the dell better still... so, yeah, I'm kinda tall too..... 8)

Hehe, yeah, I was just kidding.

I also make use of masonry on my desk. I have a brick wristrest to prevent RSI (Repetitive Strain/Stess Injury), so I just get Immediate Strain Injury to shorten the long, painful process.

You might want to try blocking those side vents and see what that does for cooling. I'm thinking that maybe some of the air being exhausted by the rear fan is being drawn through those vents and is not contributing to component cooling as well as it could because of the direct path. Or have you tested that already?

Yeah, that vent over the ninja probably doesn't do squat. But that lower one might be drawing some cool air over the video card and sound card - which would be good.

well, one things for sure. My last case was a 900, and, the videocard, north and south bridges were very hot too the touch after a couple of hours. In this case they are barely warm, which is curious to me. I haven't done any tests. I could try duct taping up the sides to see if it improves the temps. I am a bit wary with temps though, as ambient temperature really has a big effect on things.

Whether temps improve or worsen, the point for me is to try, and gain knowledge. :) You don't even need to open the case -- just block the vent with paper or something.

If those vents improve cooling significantly, then others with similar setups might consider modding their closed side panels.

So the sides been blocked up for a few hours and I haven't noticed much of a difference =/ Its getting a lot cooler now that its around 8pm, but the temps seem normal to me for the time. Hence, I would say there isn't a noticeable improvement.

*BUMP*

I swapped out my intel dg965wh mobo for a gigabyte DS3 rev 2.0. They had a bunch at microcenter for only $99. I must say, I much much happier with the gigabyte mobo. Nicer capacitors, undervolting, smaller form factor, better layout all around. My only irk is the NB feels pretty hot but speedfan says it's idling around 39-42C.

its interesting how people assess quiet based on fans. yes, that does play a big part, but, even more so, Ive noticed that harddrive noise is much more a factor. the silentdrive on foam made a world of wonders for an already quiet drive. I have the same drive in an external enclosure that doesnt have any sound proofing qualities. hearing the drive silenced and also open is like day and night. the 501LJs rotation whir was originally louder than all 3 scythe fans COMBINED, and it [501lj] is considered one of the quieter large drives!!

exactly my sentiments!! 8 months ago I had tricools on medium all the time. I had no idea no PSU was buzzing of my harddrives were even making noise. oh, how much Ive learned since then.

Have you gotten Speedfan to work with your DS3? Mine won't read/control any fans, and only gives me a CPU temperature, a Mobo temperature, and another one that doesn't work. Voltages don't work either. Is the mobo temp the Northbridge?

Temp1 is the northbridge temp as far as I can tell. I know this because the way my case is setup, I have negative air pressure which somehow manages to make the northbridge cooler. When I take the side of my case off, after about 15 minutes the northbridge will heat up about 8C. This temperature increase is reflected in speedfan.

Initially when taking the side panel of the NB will be cool. After about 15 mins itll be too hot too keep my finger there.

Temp2 is the temperature of probably the SB or the mobo or something. Temp3 isn't used.

My fan speeds are all 450000.

Yeah, yours looks like mine. I think Temp2 is you CPU also. I have a Pentium D (replacing soon), so my individual cores may not show up. I also have a RAID 0 array set up, so no HDD temp. OK, just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything. (Disabled Temp3) Thanks!
