Hi guys,

I'm Justchill from Belgium and I love this website/community!

I'm showing my own Silent PC project. My main goal was to create a silent, overclockable (= good airflow), good "bang for the buck" computer. I was greatly inspired by the many, many builds and topics here at this forum.

I use my PC for internet, office, email, multimedia, downloading and from time to time to play a game (recently I had been playing black and white 2). That's why I don't really need high end components.

Notes
- Overview of different 'mods' I've done + some comments. Some mods are worth it, some aren't. But I've done most of them just for fun..

1. Lapping of IHS: You really should do that, it makes you win 1 to 3 C's. My CPU was allready very flat, so I probably didn't win that much.
2. Cutting out grilles: it improves airflow. I'm considering cutting out the back exhaust grill to create a blowhole.
3. HD suspension: It's a PITA job, but it's worth it.
4. Ducting the ninja: Wel, you actually win 3 - 5 C on max temp @ full load!
5. Adding a pull-fan on the ninja ( push-pull config ): Didn't really help
6. Fin bending of the ninja: Didn't help much
7. Filling the heatpipe holes with thermal paste: didn't really help.
8. Using the thermalright bolt thru kit; I guess it's better but I can't compare because I never used the push-pin mounting system.
9. Adding BE QUIET isolation material.
10. Replacing the Antec tricools with Yateloon DS12L. Helps alot!

- Notes/things I've learned on silent PC:

1. It's difficult to have a silent AND overclocked PC. If you overclock, you need extra cooling, and extra cooling means more sound. You'll have to find a compromis.
2. I have 4 hard drives, and they are the loudest components in my system. You hear the motors buzzing. If you want a real real silent PC, get max 2 hard drives.
3. Get a fan controller! That is a MUST for this case. I can control 6 fans with mine. On low every fan is inaudible..

Well this is it. Now it's up to you to give comments. I'm very open for improvements.

Impressive build, not to mention the presentation on your homepage, top notch, really, I believe its the best one I’ve seen to date. The music was a nice touch listening too when scrolling thru the pictures, all I was missing was a whiskey in my hand. Well done and thanks for sharing, I enjoyed it.

No.. really the yateloons @12V are really not "quiet". They are not extra loud, but you can hear them blow. The tricools at low are quiet, but they do not move much air. My advice: get silent fans with a fancontroller. Zalman really has nice ones!

I'm sure you have! You have to know, I have 2 left hands! It's just a matter of trial and error.. And the longer you proceed, the better your work gets..

how are those temps at over a 3ghz OC on that CPU?

Well this CPU gets really hot when you overclock it >3.0Ghz.

So I have to increase the fan speeds ofcourse.

Full load temp: 57C
Idle temp: 29C

have you considered a different fan? scythe slip stream? somewhere around here i read that the new noctuas that came out weren't all that great. maybe for an exhaust fan with the cut out grill, but backpressure is a killer.

Doesn't it just feel wonderful to win lower temps? It's so...gratifying.

I changed the server of the photo album, the JAlbum server had reached max bandwith.

Nice build and results. That 3GHz mark seems to be the sweet spot on these e2XXX chips. Higher creates a lot of heat for minimal results. Your temps look great though.

True... If you want to go beyond the 3.0Ghz limit, you will have to increase Vcore (alot). The chip can do 3.6Ghz.. but with a high Vcore and generating more heat. It's a great chip for it's price however! I've bought it second hand for 40€..

I have to say im extremly impressed with the amount of work you put into this.

Its good that you told us about the parts that seemed to make a diffrence and the parts that didnt seem to make any diffrence. But maybe some parts made a diffrence in temp but not sound and vice versa.

I for one feel i can not do the hard drive hanging the way you have. Maybe if i find a easier out of the box retail set up. But then again i have 2 HDDs and i dont really know if they are audible at all after i get around to sounddampening my case.

My current set up is

Antec P182
Intel Q6600 @ 2.4
Noctua NH-U12P (CPU-cooler with noctua fan)
Gainward geforce 9600GT (gonna try and change to passive HD 3879)
Corsair 2x2GB PC8500
Corsair HX520W
3xTriCool running at low.
2xSeagate(1x250 and 1x320)

First what i have planned is this sofar:

Im gonna get 2-3 Noctua NF-P12 120mm and remove the Tricools and run the Noctua fans at lowest or middle rpm depending on where they start to become inaudible. Im also gonna get Be-quiet sounddampening kit and put sound dampening on the top of the case as well as on the bottom and the sides. If i find a out of the box easy HDD hanging solution i will get that as well. I will also make shure to close up the top vent of the P182 as i belive all the noise inside the case escapes that way. I will place 1 Noctua in the rear, 1 in front of the HDDs at the lowest chamber and remove the middle HDD chamber and put a Noctua there.

I dont know how much this will help but im hoping i wont be able to hear it from 30cm away as well as being able to overclock my processor to 3Ghz without a heatproblem.

If anyone have any advice do let me know.

Just curious, but did you notice any improvement from adding the BE QUIET insulation material? What I've noticed with the Antec P18x cases is that it's sturdy enough not to have any vibration problems, so that makes case damping material not quite as effective.

Well, I must say I didn't listen to it when it wasn't inside, so I can't really tell. But I did use some in my HTPC build and there it makes a difference..

I'm now showing my silent HTPC project. The main goal was to create a very silent, decent and as cheap as possible HTPC.
I mainly use my HTPC for watching movies, pictures, listening to music, playing old console but with Generic Viagra MediaPortal there are much more possibilities.

Notes

1. I've used the Ninja Passively, so no CPU cooler fan.
2. Replacing the antec tri-cool casefans by 2 X yateloon D12SL.
3. Replacing the Earthwatts PSU by a very silent Enermax modu82+ 425W. I must say it's way too powerfull and I regret buying it.
4. I've used BE Quiet dampening materials to the room where the harddrives are.
5. I've put the hardrives in 2 Scythe Quiet drive cases.
6. I've used extra foam to absorp harddisk vibrations.

- Windows VISTA Ultimate 32 bits
- Media Portal 1.0
