Virtually Silent 4.2TB Media PC.

Post by taznz » Sat Dec 04, 2010 8:01 pm

This is the lastest incarnation of my Media PC, I keep upgrading it to keep pace with my storage needs and my changing usage habits.

System Spec:
AMD Athlon II X2 260u (25W TDP) processor.
Thermaltake Sonic Tower passive CPU cooler.
Thermalright Customized AM2 RM (Rev.B) retention bracket.
MSI 890GXM-G65 mATX motherboard.
Kingston DDR3-1333 4GB Value RAM Kit. (Running Undervolted @ 1066Mhz)
OCZ Onyx 32GB SATA2 SSD. (Boot & App. drive, eliminated Windows disk trash)
Western Digital WD15EARS 1.5TB Green Drives. (4x in RAID-5)
Modified Hard Drive Cage form Coolermaster Storm Scout case.
LG GSA-H12N IDE DVD-Writer. (Region Free Firmware Hacked)
DAIKO CR05D Multicard Reader.
Themaltake 450watt PSU. (Fan grill removed, Fan replaced with Scythe S-FLEX SFF21D 800rpm FAN, customed wiring lumb)
Procase CS5218 mATX Case (customed wiring lumb).
Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit.

How the sytem looked before custom PSU wiring lumb and switch to the onboard RAID controller.

The loudest thing as always is the DVD-Writer, but you only hear the disc seek on boot and then it's silent unless I'm watching a DVD and then it's very quiet, noisy reading & writing data but. (I'm thinking of filling the space above it, and bay below it with AcoustiPack EXTRA foam blocks.)

Very impressive, How did you mount that Hard Drive Cage?

It's just riveted to the bottom of the case, I used the original mounting holes from where it was riveted in the CM Storm Scout case, I just had to make a few measurement and drill four holes in the bottom of the case for the rivets. It's not mounted at the top in any way, so it flexs a bit until hard drives are installed then it's solid. I also had to use a dremel to remove some bits to clear rivets on the case, but the hardest part was getting it out of the damaged donor case in the first place.
