My Entry into Modern/Quiet Computing

Post by dontknow » Sun Dec 04, 2011 2:47 pm

Hello members of SPCR,

I have been lurking here for quite a while, and have learned much from many of the great posts here. I thought I would like to share with you all my computer build I did with all the vast amounts of knowledge I learned here:

Image

Below is a list of everything:
- Fractal Design R3 USB3 Black Pearl
- Seasonic X-650
- Gigabyte 970A-UD3 Motherboard
- AMD Phenom II 960T CPU
- Sapphire 6850 Vapor-X Edition
- 8GB Corsair 1600Mhz DDR3 RAM
- Scythe Mugen 3 Heatsink and Fan
- Arctic Cooling MX-4 Thermal Paste
- Hitachi Desktar 500GB HDD
- Samsung 830 Series 128GB SSD
- 3x Scythe SY1225SL12LM-P 120mm PWM Fans
- Samsung DVD Writer
- 2x Rosewill PWM Splitter

With knowledge I learned from here, I was able to unlock my CPU to 6 cores and overclock to a modest 3.6Ghz. More importantly, I stumbled upon PhenomMsrTweaker here, and was able to use that software to underlock the CPU to 800Mhz at 0.75v on idle.

I am very happy with my system. My previous system was loud and annoying. Thanks SPCR forums for leading me in the right direction to think about more than just pure performance. I hope in the future to continue learning from here.

I'll say welcome as well.

What would you consider to be the noisiest part, if there are any? The sapphire? Or how does the vibration from the HD impact acoustics?

To me, the computer is practically silent.

The nosiest part are probably the 3 Scythe Fans I have (4, counting the one on the Mugen 3), once they start kicking up over 1000 RPM. The Sapphire 6850 Vapor-X gets pretty noisy if I turn up the fan speed manually in MSIAfterburner to over 50%. Otherwise, I don't notice it at all, especially when gaming. The one thing I'm not sure about is that the MSIAfterburner does not let me alter the voltages on the GPU. I would like to make an attempt to undervolt it, but it appears locked on the Vapor-X model.

Regarding the HDD, I don't actually hear any clicking from it.
