Pretty quiet Antec Solo II gaming PC

Post by mentawl » Tue Feb 19, 2013 8:46 am

Just thought I'd post up the latest iteration of my main PC. Primary uses are gaming, bit of coding, bit of web dev, bit of virtualisation, and anything else that comes up :). Spec:

Intel i5 2500k @ 4.5ghz / 1.3v with a Scythe Ninja Rev.A, modified clips and a Noiseblocker eLoop Bionic B12-PS PWM fan.
4x8GB generic DDR3 @ 1600mhz via XMP.
nVidia GTX670 with Antec Kuhler 620 + fan on PCI bracket for VRM cooling.
Asus Xonar DX PCI-E.
Antec Neo 430w PSU.
Antec Solo II.
2x2TB Samsung HDDs.
1x128GB and 1x512GB Crucial SSDs.
BluRay and DVD-RW drives.
2x Corsair SP-120 front fans, Fractal Design 120mm/1000rpm fan exhaust.

No major mods were done to the case really. I built a custom power chain with 6x SATA power connectors and a single FDD power connector for the soundcard, which keeps things nice and tidy in front of the CPU fan. The Ninja's original Socket 478 clips were modified to fit socket 1155. A bracket was purchased to mount the Kuhler 620 block on the GTX670.

Pics (sorry for glare in some : it's very difficult to photograph a black case without glare or a loss of detail):

Very pretty. What are you seeing for temps/noise at idle and gaming?

Idle is low 30s for both GPU and CPU, rises to mid 50s/low 60s under gaming load (GW2 at the moment, as probably the most stressful game I have). 20c-ish ambient in the room. All the fans spin at 600rpm at idle, CPU fan spins up to 1000rpm under load, front and rear fans to about 900.

I can't tell if the machine is on when it's just idling, there's a bit of a whoosh from it under gaming load, but nothing distracting, just a healthy-movement-of-air noise :).

Cool. Here's a suggestion for GW2 (if you haven't already done it) - under game menu/ options/ graphics options, set the frame rate to 60 rather than unlimited. All unlimited will do is use more power without providing a benefit.
