Cheap and simple 120mm duct.

Enclosures and acoustic damping to help quiet them.

Cheap and simple 120mm duct.

Post by peterson » Thu Sep 29, 2005 5:24 am

Don't know if it's common knowledge and/or completely useless.
I just thought i'd mention it.

A CD/DVD is 120mm in diameter right? And when buying spindles of 50-100 pcs, they come in a package that can perhaps be used as a duct for 120mm fans.
A 100pcs spindle gives ~150mm long duct. Easy to cut as well :)

Let me know if it's useful :)

Thanks. I just checked and a 3,5" HDD fits too. A bit more work requiered to mount it though.

Great tip. It's one of those things that make you go DOH because it's smart and simple at the same time. I've been using cds for a template for 120mm fans for years but I've never put 2&2 together. I think the 100 cd ones would be perfect for most situations as you can cut an angle on both ends and you're done.

I've been using them and coke bottles for a while, although recently we had some 5" extractor fans fittined in the house and the flexible ducting from them is a perfect size :)

Transparency sheets eh? Interesting.... I wouldn't have thought they would be strong enough, but I'll have to check them out now. I guess you can always glue two sheets together too.

Some good ideas here - I love threads like this. :)

it depends on how they are supported i guess, my previous design just had a sheet rolled into a cylinder of the right diameter to fit on a zalman 7000cu and it pointed straight out of the case (297mm), the end of this indeed tried to collapse but I had some UV braid stuff so I made a loop and stuck this inside the entrance and it held the circle shape. Got me through a tough patch this summer (though british summers aren't much to write home about :? )

i wonder if anyone has those in-wall vacuum cleaner sockets where u plug in the tube only and it sucks all the dirt into an outside bin. Can u plug in a PC?
