Cases with 1 front/2 rear 120 mm fans

Post by gandrusz » Tue Apr 10, 2007 9:48 am

Hi,

I am new to silent computing and my current PC is horribly noisy. I started looking for components to build a more quiet one, but I have problems to find a decent case. I am looking for a simple solution:

A full tower, with 2 rear and one front 120 mm fans. Do you know any such models?

I am not an expert, but I was thinking that having a big case with many quiet fans is a good starting point. And I don't really like the look of P180 cases :(

Thanks,
Gregor

Hello Gregor & welcome to SPCR,

Sure, the Antec P180 has two 120mm exhaust fans, and one 120mm intake. But, what do you have currently, that makes you think you need to leap all the way to this much air flow?

Hi Neil,

Thanks for the quick reply! To be honest currently I don't have any hot components, but I want to have open options for the future. Maybe I would invest in a graphics card 8800 level, I read that there are some new GPU coolers on the market. I guess all the extra airflow will be necessary in this case.

Is it really not possible not to buy P180?

Cheers,
Gregor

gandrusz you should know that more fans does not == cooler eg: a less hot computer.

If you take a look a the gallery of some of the members set up's you will see most run 2-3 fans.

What are your current system spec's or the system you thought of building spec's?

This info will go a long way in helping you pick a case/fans/ect

Gigabyte Aurora has dual exhaust fans on the back panel. Only problem is it's aluminium construction so a bit more difficult to silence

Hello,

The P180 is a fine case, but in my opinion it is "more" case than is required for most people. It has space for 6 or 7 hard drives? The Antec Solo or P150 are excellent cases with slightly more modest aims: room for 3 drives when suspending them, or 4 if you use the sleds. They have very nice wire management, too.

The suspension and the lack of a door, (and no need for long PSU cables), are the key advantages of the Solo and P150, for me anyway. And the 120mm exhaust and two 92mm intakes are more than enough to keep just about any machine cool, while staying quiet. Most of the time you might not even need any front fans, or maybe only one for one or two hot-running hard drives, and/or with high ambient room temps.

[Edit: Remember: the Solo comes w/o a PSU, while the P150 has an Antec PSU.]

However one must factor in the power unit used with the solo. As you give up the modularity of the he430 included with the P150.

With 180 one would need all the cable length they could get if their 24pin is in some odd spot on the board. Though I will agree for most situations the 180 is over kill.

Actually, having two rear exhaust fans is not a bad idea. I have a similar setup in mind.

In overclocked systems with tower heatsinks, you could build an airduct around the heatsink, attach a push-fan on it and connect the duct to one of the rear fans. This would be a dedicated heatsink cooling.

The other fan could be used to exhaust the rest warm air out of the case.

If one does a "power search" over on NewEgg they will find

97 cases with 2 120mm openings
40 cases with 3 120mm openings
15 cases with 4 120mm openings
and 1 case with
7 120mm openings

On the 7 120mm case... Only one front 120mm fan for the drives and it's obstructed by that much metal? I'll pass. :)
