I'm trying to find the perfect case.

- MINI-DTX is a must. This counts out all the mini-itx specific cases.
- At least half-height expansion is a must (vertical preferred)
- 4 x 3.5" HDD
- 1 x 2.5" HDD

I DONT need:

- optical space
- power supply space (pico-psu)
- fan mounting spaces

I am trying to build a passively cooled PC. I am starting with all passive components. I hope to modify a case to suit my needs, but it would be nice if it had at least some of what I am looking for.

- My plan is to attach generic heatsinks to the sides of the case, big ones. Then I will use multiple methods to get the heat from the components to the heatsinks.

- I will be modding the entire exterior of the case, including using a completely perforated top panel to help dissipate heat.

- I want a minimalist front panel. I really don't need anything more than a power button, but a VFD would also be acceptable. No optical, I despise optical media.

Anything out there that suits my needs?

Probably not. You'd have found it already.

I'd remind you that the Silverstone breadbox cases (SH05/06/07) all have two expansion slots -- they are mini-DTX.

But 4 x 3.5" HDDs and fanless don't compute. Those HDDs will drown out any 120mm fan that can easily cool them all... so why would you bother trying fanless?

In the SPCR lab, we have a system that is single-fan cooled with a single platter Samsung 500gb ecogreen encased in a Scythe or Smart HDD silencer sitting on foam -- and the HDD is still the loudest component.

the CHENBRO ES34169-BK-120 is a very nice looking case, imho.

it has 4 3.5" hot swap bays, a spot for a 2.5" drive, fits mini-dtx (learned from manufacturers site and manual, not newegg), has a half height expansion slot(you'll need a riser card, i think it might come with one though...)... the top is mostly ventilated, a couple small fans are easily removed, and the small 120w psu should come out with ease as well.

all this in a case that is under 10 litres, iirc.

sounds perfect really. the other mini chenbro's lack the expansion card slot btw.
