Silverstone SG03 chasis - PSU/CPU heatsink fan placement

Post by mariner8611 » Sun Dec 04, 2011 10:40 pm

Greetings Mike and Neil. Great forum.

I'm looking at the Silverstone SG03 chasis to be used with a 70mm Evercool HPKC-10025EA CPU Cooler. The stock heatsink fan will be replaced by a 120mm Slipstream fan running at 750rpm.

The systems consists of Intel E7600 CPU/Sapphire HD6670 graphics card/Crucial M4 SSD. The objective is to achieve adequate cooling with as few fans/lowest noise possible.

The SG03 is designed with the PSU sitting on top the CPU heatsink. The PSU can be installed either with the fan facing the heatsink, drawing hot air from the chassis, or facing outward, drawing outside air to cool the PSU itself.

There appears to be a number of different way to installed the PSU/heatsink/case fan. Would appreciate an explanation of the relative merits/disadvantages.

1.PSU fan facing inward. Heatsink installed without fan, relying on PSU fan to dissipate hot air.
2.PSU fan facing inward. Heatsink installed with fan blowing away from heatsink.
3.PSU fan facing inward. Heatsink installed with fan blowing at heatsink.
4.PSU fan facing outward. Heatsink installed with fan blowing at heatsink.
5.PSU fan facing outward. Heatsink installed with fan blowing away from heatsink.
6.Fanless PSU?
7.Front chassis fan acting as intake fan.
8.Front chassis fan acting as exhaust fan.
9.Front chassis fan off.
10.How about the graphics card?

Many thanks and best regards.
