Help choosing a silent HTPC case.

Hello.
I´m going to buy a HTPC and I´m having trouble choosing the case.
From all the cases i saw i liked the ANTEC FUSION REMOTE MAX BLACK.
I need a opinion from people like you that really know about the silent pc.

The case will have this components:

Motherboard: GIGABYTE - Z77X-UP4 TH
Power Supply: SEASONIC X-660
CPU: INTEL - Core i7-3770S/3.1GHz 8MB LGA1155 65W
CPU Fan: CORSAIR - Hydro Series H60 Cooler CPU
SSD: VERTEX 4 SERIES SATA III 2.5Pol 128GB
HDD: 2x WESTERN DIGITAL - Disco 1TB 64Mb, 6Gb/s, Green, SATA -WD10EZRX 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive
Memory: G.SKILL PC3-12800 1600MHZ RIPJAWSX 16GB CL10 (2X8GB) DDR3
Video Card: ASUS GEFORCE GTX670 DIRECT CU II 2GB GDDR5 PCI-E 3.0
Optical drive: Asus BC-12B1ST BLK B AS

I really need your help. This case is expensive, i need to know it there are other better options for this price, in your opinion.

Thank you all.

Hi and welcome to SPCR. Have you looked at the Silverstone Grandia series? The GD05 was reviewed http://www.silentpcreview.com/article1033-page1.html]here along with the Antec Fusion Remote Max. If you have the vertical space, there's also the GD07/GD08 that allows for taller CPU cooler and a longer PSU.

Some comments on your component list:
- How are you going to use the HTPC?
- do you really have need for an i7?
- In general, I don't think the S CPU parts are worth it. Buy the non-S part and then underclock/undervolt it if you want.
- your GPU looks suspiciously like a motherboard :)
- you probably don't need a 660W PSU, could go lower and save $'s.
- The Corsair H60 isn't known to be ultraquiet and chances are, won't be much better than a decent air cooler.
- why two 1TB HDDs?
- do you have need for two Thunderbolt ports on a mobo? If not, you could go to a lesser board and save $'s.

Thank you for your help.
I will try to nswer your questions now :-)

- How are you going to use the HTPC?
I will use it for 3d games and movies, listening music, edit some home made movies and others things like word, powerpoint... Basically I want a quiet PC because it will be placed at my bedroom under my full hdtv. It will be connected to my tv through hdmi i think...

- do you really have need for an i7?
I want a good CPU that uses low energy and still have a great performance in multitasking and games.

- In general, I don't think the S CPU parts are worth it. Buy the non-S part and then underclock/undervolt it if you want.
I thought about that, but i don't know how to undervolt it and I heard that could make it unstable, thats why I choose the s, because uses less energy and don't get so hot.

- your GPU looks suspiciously like a motherboard
My mistake :-), Now its fine. I think this is the most problematic concerning the noise emission. I choose the Asus because its the most silent that i found.

- you probably don't need a 660W PSU, could go lower and save $'s.
I don't know. Now that I have the GPU see if I still can have a lower PSU please.

- The Corsair H60 isn't known to be ultraquiet and chances are, won't be much better than a decent air cooler.
Hmmm so what you recommend?

- why two 1TB HDDs?
I want to backup all my movies and musics is the safest way possible. In a way that i only have 1 TB available but all the data are duplicated in the two HDD´s.

- do you have need for two Thunderbolt ports on a mobo? If not, you could go to a lesser board and save $'s.
I want a mobo with thunderbolt because in the near future will go out many hardware that will use it. (sorry about my english)

The case that you recommended its fine, but I choose the one with the biggest fans so they are more efficient and do less noise. And I like very much the concealed usd... at front, behind that panel.

Thank you. I know its difficult a silent HTPC for games...

Ok, I have a better idea how you will use the PC. Here's how I'd repartition the money spent.

CPU: The only app that will make use of the i7's hyperthreading is when you edit movies. Very few games will benefit from the i7 and the sweet spot for gaming is the i5-3570K (K due to the overclocking ability). In fact, you'll get better fps in games with a higher clocked i5-3570 (3.4GHz) vs the lower clocked i7-3770S (3.1GHz). The S might have a lower TDP (65W vs 77W), but in reality, for similar loads, it'll be close to similar power draw. In the end, the GPU power will swamp out trying to save 12W on the CPU. So, unless you plan to spend most of your time editing/encoding video, go for the i5 and save $100.

CPU cooler: A couple of choices. For ~$70 the Noctua NH-L12. For ~$45 get the Scythe Shuriken 2 Rev B (and replace the low profile fan with a Scythe 120mm PWM Flex or Slipstream).

GPU: Since you are connecting to the TV/using HDMI, the resolution is 1920x1080. My take is you can spend ~$200 and have a great 1080p card like the GTX 660that will be good for 2 years and $300 for a card like the GTX 660 Ti that'll last 3 years. You won't see any worthy performance gain at this resolution moving up the the $400 GTX 670. Both Asus and MSI make great cards.

PSU: If you go with the 77W CPU and stick with the GTX 670, your stressed load power is less than 300W and will draw ~250W or less gaming. Less another 20-30W if you get the 660 or 660 Ti. So, you could drop down to the X-560 or the Kingwin LZP-550 and still be very quiet while gaming.

Memory: Look for low profile RAM so there aren't clearance issues with the cooler.

Mobo: Thunderbolt is nice...but if you don't have any need for it now or anytime in the next year, I wouldn't go out of your way to get it on the mobo. There's bound to be PCIe add-on cards soon. In any case, Gigabyte makes nice cards, but their fan control is primitive. Take a look at the Asus Z77 boards.

Ok. Thank you for your help I really appreciated.
I´m going to listen your advices because the HTPC was getting really expensive :-/

Case: ANTEC FUSION REMOTE MAX BLACK ? (I don't know)

Motherboard: ASUS P8Z77-V PRO/THUNDERBOLT - 220 euros (more 26 euros than ASUS P8Z77-V PRO)
CPU: INTEL 1155 I5 3570K 3.40GHZ 6MB BOX - 211 euros (-86 euros than the i7-3770S)
CPU Cooler: NOCTUA NH-L12 LOW PROFILE - 51,95 euros
GPU: ASUS GEFORCE GTX660 TI DIRECT CU II 2GB GDDR5 PCI-E 3.0 - 305,85 euros (-109 euros than GTX670)
Power Supply: SEASONIC X-660 151,40 euros (the X-560 is only 5 euros less expensive, and is not for sale at the store I will buy)
SSD: OCZ VERTEX 4 128GB SSD 2.5" SATA III - 110,10 euros
HDD: 2X WESTERN DIGITAL CAVIAR GREEN 1TB 7200RPM 64MB SATA III 3.5 - 72,95 euros
Memory: CORSAIR PC3-12800 1600MHZ 16GB VENGEANCE LP CL9 (2X8GB) DDR3 - 88,95 euros
Optical drive: ASUS BC-12B1ST BLU RAY - 63,35 euros
Total: 1348 euros (and is missing the case... I think I like the GD08) it's still very expensive... unless the mobo could be other than the pro version, I don't know...

Thank you.

Oh, drop the RAM to 8GB. You don't have any apps that'll make use of more than that.

Total: 1232 euros (without the case...)

Well, I think this is it.
It's only missing the case... witch I can't decide...
I saw a review of the Silverstone Grandia GD08 and they could´t use any of the new video cards, there was no space...(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NxslPW_m ... r_embedded) and its impossible to use 2 optical drives because the second (the one placed down) can't fit because of the CPU cooler... that's very bad :-/

Thank you.

I think for the sake or reliability you should swap that SSD for a Samsung 183 series (now that the 184 is out, prices should be lower)

- Silverstone Grandia GD08
- Lian Li PC-C60

Thank you.

Well I think I'm going for the Silverstone Grandia GD08.
But if so, I have to go to a different CPU cooler because this one doesn't leave enough space to install the second optical drive.

Thank you.

Well I don't need it really, but if there is a place for it, maybe in the future I buy a second one.... I don't know.
Now I'm thinking if I should chose the GD07 or the GD08...

The GD06,07,08 -- they're all the same chassis, only differences are on the front panel, really, mostly external drive bays. If you don't know why you might want a 2nd ODD, assume you don't need one. The need for them is really fading... unless you buy/rent bluray. I actually don't have any optical drive in my HTPC. If I need one (rarely), I bring in my external USB based drive.

Probably too late, but don't buy them aluminium cases. I have tried Silverstone's and Lian LI. They get hot very very fast, and you will struggle to connect everything inside and still have room for airflow.
The only case that can take intense gaming, HD movies, and so forth, and still be cool and whisper quiet, all the time, is the Fusion Max from Antec.

The only minus Fusion Remote has, is the fans:
Replace the tricool fans it comes with. They are noisy even at low speeds.

Also Antec have the most excellent customer support if u need help, or spare parts.
Your choice of other hardware is excellent, especially the PSU from Seasonic. But buy some Scythe flex fans for the chassis aswell.

Hello everyone :-) Thank you for your excellent help last year. I waited for the haswell to go out. Now I have to view everything again to be sure that still the right configuration.
I was thinking, and now the 4th gen CPU have better graphics, so I wont be using for now a GPU, but in the future probably I will need to use it.

This is my config at the moment:

Case: LIAN LI PC-C60 BLACK…………………………………..............………………..………….....…….… 205,70€
Motherboard: ASUS Z87-EXPERT SKT 1150……………………………………….….........…...………..212,05€
CPU: INTEL I7 4770T 2.5GHZ 6M SKT 1150 TRAY……………….……………............……..……..….297,50€
CPU Cooler:NOCTUA NH-L12 LOW PROFILE....................................................................53,95€
Power Supply: SEASONIC P760W SEMIFANLESS MODULAR 80PLUS PLATINUM..........179,70€
SSD: SAMSUNG SERIES 840 ULTRASLIM 250GB 2.5" SATA III.......................................149,95€
Memory: I don't know...

Optical drive, GPU and HDD: None for now. I will buy them later when necessary.

What do you think? I'm still looking for silent and low power consumption HTPC.

Thank you :-)

Case: LIAN LI PC-C60 BLACK…………………………………..............………………..…….........…….....…….… 205,70€
or Silverstone Grandia GD08......................................................................................................................140,00 €
or Antec Fusion Remote Max HTPC.............................................................................................................213.95 €
or ???

Motherboard: ASUS Z87-EXPERT SKT 1150……………………………………….…...........…...….........……..212,05€

Memory: CORSAIR PC3-12800 1600MHZ 16GB VENGEANCE LP CL10 (2X8GB) DDR3 (1.35V or 1.5???)..161,25€

This is my configuration.

I'm looking for a HTPC case that have 140mm fans, these are more silent. But the only one that I know is the LIAN LI PC-C60 BLACK. But this case don't have a back fan.The ventilation is not very good.
The Antec Fusion Remote Max have 1 140mm fan and other 120mm. Perhaps this is really the best option @Woody. But it has USB2.0, not 3.o like the others. And doesn't have positive air pressure inside and don´t see dust filters as well.

I want a ATX case because I will use a GPU later.
Can anyone help me. Thanks.

Looking for horizontal case with 140mm is going to be hard, most of the high end ones come with 120s, like Silverstone Grandia series. In all honesty if you have quiet in mind, you will have much more options on 120mm fans than 140mm, given that there are some good options in both, i would give the edge to 120mm as being the current standard for most cases/building, even the watercooling community still builds mostly on 120s.

Hello. Its too expensive. I changed some things but decided to introduce some others...

Case: Silverstone SST-GD07B (Black)………………….......………………..…….........…….....…….… 142,58 €
Motherboard: ASUS Z87-EXPERT SKT 1150……………………………………………………………..209,06€
CPU: Intel Core i7-4765T TRAY……………….……………..……………..……………………………….279,22€
CPU Cooler: NOCTUA NH-L12 LOW PROFILE……………………………..………………………..…….57,00€
Power Supply: Seasonic P-660…………………..………………….……………………..……………….172,14€
SSD: Samsung 250GB 520/540 840EVOKit Des 2.5" SATA III…………………………………………190,11€
Memory: Corsair 4GB 1600-999 Vengeance LP x2(1.35V or 1.5???)…………………………………..82,04€
HDD: Western Digital 2TB WD20EURS AV-GP Sata 2 (x2)………………………………………………196,9€
Drive: Pioneer BDR-208DBK 15x Black………………………………………………………………….…75,96€

1404 €

Its too expensive... still...

The case it will be this one.
The mobo, I want future proof with thunderbolt and a Asus because of the fan control.
The CPU... I will do Blu-Ray video processing, see Blu-ray movies and play some not very exigent games. So i think that i will need a quadcore. This one has 35w TDT, but only 2.0GHZ... I don't know... What you think?
I changed the power supply.
This SSD its too expensive, but don't want less than 256GB. Someone told me that samsung was reliable... what you know about it?
The memory I passed to 8GB.
I have to have HDD to backup my files. I want to have the HDD like in mirror. I will have 2x 2TB, but the files will be copied in both of them simultaneously for safety. So I will have only 2 TB of storage capacity. I like the WD HDD.
I like Pioneer for Drives. Well i liked my DVD one, so... I hope the Bly-ray one is as good.

Well I want a very efficient silent HTPC, so I have to paid for it... But Is there something you change to make it more affordable?

Thank you so much.

Funny complaint when you don't listen to good advise from Steve& others... and overbuy everything.
Avirhel wrote:The mobo, I want future proof with thunderbolt...
And what do you think you'll do with TB, anyway? Addon cards for TB are coming & Asus will announce TB-upgradeable boards soon. See this: http://blogs.intel.com/technology/2013/ ... computers/

"Futureproofing" is no way to assemble a system that's cost effective for your needs.

Why would you go for an ATX board? -- the case has to be bigger, & you need more room: Only worthwhile if you'll use those extra slots. Go with a mATX board & smaller case -- like Silverstone GD05. Both board & case will be cheaper.

The chosen CPU is too much when you're only going to play blurays & undemanding games -- any current CPU can do bluray fine. If you must have Haswell, go for the cheapest -- i5-4670 or 4670s, currently.

You also don't need anything like a 660W PSU. Your system will not even pull 150W max in actual use. A 300W good brand PSU would do fine!

You'll never use that 16gb RAM, it's a waste. Down it to 8.

Last night I was trying to low the price of the HTPC.
The HTPC, like i said is not just for bluray ans some games. Its for video processing too. I want this box because I will add more HDD in the future, many of them I´m sure of it. And I will use in the future a video card too.
I want a ATX mob because of this. I may change the HTPC to a game machine in the future. I changed the mobo last night thinking that if I need thunderbolt in the future I can add it.
Thats why I choose a better Power Supply, because I will add many HDD and video card in a near future.
The CPU... I was comparing them... I really don´t know what to do. I think this to much expensive, but it is so great...
The memory, I changed to 8GB already.
I added HDD's because this will be my backup. I will use many HDD in mirror, the files wil be saved in both at the same time for safety. So for now I only will have 2TB with this configuration.

Latest config:
Case: Silverstone SST-GD07B (Black)………………….......………………..…….........…….....…….… 142,58 €
Motherboard: Asus Z87-PRO………………………………………………………………………………..195,13€
CPU: Intel Core i5-4670T TRAY……………….……………..……………..……………………………….196,31€
CPU Cooler: NOCTUA NH-L12 LOW PROFILE……………………………..………………………..…….57,00€
Power Supply: Seasonic P-660…………………..………………….……………………..……………….172,14€
SSD: Samsung 120GB 410/540 840 EVO Basic…………………………………………………………..110,85€
Memory: Corsair 4GB 1600-999 Vengeance LP x2(1.35V or 1.5???)…………………………………..82,04€
HDD: Western Digital 2TB WD20EURS AV-GP Sata 2 (x2)………………………………………………196,9€
Drive: Pioneer BDR-208DBK 15x Black………………………………………………………………….…75,96€

I try to listen to everyone,
Thank you all for the help.

You didn't learn about the S and T CPU, didn't you? Complaining about the build being to expensive and buying a castrated CPU for more than necessary?
MikeC wrote:Funny complaint when you don't listen to good advise from Steve& others... and overbuy everything.
Still applies to psu, cpu and your double HDD-stuff, which you'll never really get silent by the way, and planning a gaming build with a powerful gpu in that silverstone case... lots of luck with that plan.

Well, you are born free and you have the freedom not to listen to good advice, because this is a free forum and it's your money anyway that you spend for silly stuff.

Firs of al I'm not complaining. I'm thinking loud to myself to find a way to chose a cheaper HTPC build.
Well so I should go for the K CPU... 84 TDP... I don't want this!
If I use all the HDD's...
Well what I need is a HTPC for games/blu-ray movies, and video edition/encoding. I will backup all my movies and music in HDD's because I don´t have money to buy only SSD´s.
I didn't say that I want a powerful video card.
I want o good base (motherbord) to do all of this. Now i 'm not going to buy the video card, but If the HD 4600 isn't enough for my needs I will buy one in the future.
If I buy a small case and mobo, then I cant install the HDD's that I need to backup or a standard video card size.
I don't know nothing anymore. I´m confused...
