How much of an impact on sound would a hotswap bay have?

Enclosures and acoustic damping to help quiet them.

How much of an impact on sound would a hotswap bay have?

Post by Fraoch » Wed Nov 20, 2013 1:46 pm

I'm considering one of these:

I'm sure putting an open hole in the front of a case would have an impact on sound though! It would also let in dust. The sound effect might be mitigated somewhat with a closed, dampened door in front of it like the one on the Fractal Design R4.

Does anyone have experience with things like these? Is the impact on sound with a dampened door closed still all that substantial?

Thank you.

If it's behind the R4's door, I don't you'll notice it. However, when in use, you'd have to keep the door open as a 2.5" HDD will stick out a bit. That'll be noisy. Go to ~ 5:30 in this video.

I wouldn't mind keeping the door open and the temporary noise - it would be for weekly backups and only for about 20 minutes at a time. I could then do away with picky USB 3.0 controllers, slow USB 2.0 interfaces and all those cables...

Yet another computer toy to consider. :D

Thanks.

How about one of these hotswap bays, where the 3.5" drive is kept flush with the front of the case? :)

Very nice...flush front, drive access light, no gaping hole, filtered air intake...thank you for the suggestion.

Never really tried a hotswapable hdd on my R4, but i do have a 2.5 7200rpm on the 5.25 bays and i cant hear it.

There was a guy that was building a very quiet PS07 which doesnt have a door on the top, he installed noise dampening all over the case, and at the end used a Icybox MB153SP-B "FatCage" 3 in 2 SATA Internal Backplane Module in 2x 5.25 bays, not sure how it turn out in hdd noise, but he defently builded for a very quiet setup.... again not sure how it ended on hdd noise. In case you are interested, ill leave you the link, Post 5265

You could also use one of these - they have 2.5 adapters as well for them. They don't stick out from the bays.
