Enclosures and acoustic damping to help quiet them.

Budget micro atx server/general usage case

Post by cl0h » Sat Mar 08, 2014 2:52 am

hi all,
I've lurked around here in the past when I was building a HTPC. Now I'm selling my Antec Fusion Remote black case and moving the internals to a new home upstairs in a corner of our guest bedroom. I'm looking for a new case and nothing in the recommended list meets my low budget.
The components I laready own are:
PSU: Seasonic M12II 520
MoBo: Asus P8Z77-M PRO Z77
CPU: Intel Pentium Dual-Core G645T
RAM: 8GB (2x4GB) Corsair DDR3 XMS3
SSD: OCZ vertex 3 120GB
HD: 2 x WD Green 1TB
GPU: old Nvidia gainward 8600 gt
Usage is as a file and media server though I don't intend to add hard drives and I'd prefer a small footprint, plain black case. I run some apps remotely and Virtualbox occasionally but my main concern is quietness at idle (and when streaming a movie probably).
I realise the GPU is an anomoly but it was a hand me down from a friend and I don't game so I've never bothered replacing it.

Budget : I just bought an ultrabook so I'm looking to spend as little as possible basically. I'm currently looking at the Fractal Design Core 1000 (because it gets good reviews in general) and the new Silverstone PS09 (because it is marketed as quiet).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
C.

I think you are looking into the right cases for budget micro atx build. The Silverstone is kinda new, so you wont find much info on it, and the Fractal is a low budget case, what i dont like is the small fans, either should work well with a low budget build.

Since you say you don't game, just use the included iGPU on the celeron, its low end but it should be good enough for a server and will save you money in consumption and will also lower the amount of noise and heat on the setup.

Actually, the ancient 8600GT isn't that much faster than the iGP.

What small fans? The Core 1000 comes with a 120mm front fan. I've got two Core 1000s too (one with 2.6ghz Ivy Bridge dual core, other with 3 ghz Haswell dual core) and I run them without the front fan.
I do wish Fractal Design made a more compact Core..

You are correct, my mistake, i assume the since the back slot space for a fan is 92mm, that the frontal were 92mm as well.
