My 11 year-old computer started dying and I haven’t been impressed with how current case designs deal with air flow from high powered GPUs. The two main problems I see are that:
For systems with high power CPUs and GPUs, this would seem to be a problem if you want to keep your fan speeds as low as possible. Given the current fan cooler designs of GPUs, I’ve wondered whether the system might be improved by providing a slit exhaust in the side of the case over the GPU. This would allow a significant fraction of GPU heat to escape from the case without being fed back into the CPU. This would also prevent some of the GPU exhaust from being fed back into the GPU. A potential downside would be that the slit might also allow more fan noise from the GPU to escape.
GPU shortages sabotaged my original plans for an RTX 3080 GPU, and I ended up with an RTX 3060 Ti to go along with my AMD 5950X CPU. I haven’t attempted to cut a port over the GPU since the standard case configuration seems adequate for the moderate power needs of the RTX 3060 Ti. However, I’m still intrigued with the concept of an exhaust slit on the GPU. I’ve seen some clever ideas presented here by others, so I thought that I present this idea in anyone thought it useful.

- Some hot exhaust from the GPU gets recycled back into the GPU
- Some hot exhaust from the GPU gets fed into the CPU
